After we already reported in July about the new lighting model and the new A330 by Laminar Research for X-Plane, the developers have now officially revealed the actual reason for this development: there will soon be a new part of the X-Plane series! The main focus is on the improvement of visual things, but there are also a lot of other new features...
Let's start with the scenery... Compared to the predecessor, the scenery has really been improved. We still don't have real satellite images, but the AutoGen and the placement of houses, trees, streets, ... ... are now significantly optimised! Laminar Research seems to be particularly proud of the trees and - admittedly - we have to say that they look really fantastic - see for yourself! Another small hint: there are now also seasons!
We'll stick to the overall theme of "scenery", but move on to an airport... There are significant changes here, such as completely new runways with more precise and rule-compliant markings, new textures on the airport grounds that also adapt to how often an airport is used in real life or how old it is, there are finally standard ground handling tools (jetways & pushback trucks), new ground vehicles, detailed towers and much more! Again, see for yourself!
So, change of subject: weather. This has been massively optimised - there are new clouds, a great weather model and finally realistic rain on the windows and on the ground!
In addition, there are 5 new aircraft with the following names: Citation, Evo, F-14, A330 and Cirrus. We have already reported in detail about the A330, but all the other aircraft are new to us. Except for the F-14 (and the A330), all of them are smaller passenger aircraft used more for "private" purposes. The F-14, on the other hand, is a fighter jet!
Apart from that, a lot has been or is still being optimised: for example, there is now an improved ATC, new setting options that allow more key assignments and also the sound has been tweaked a lot until it suited the developers at Laminar Research. Unfortunately, this fine-tuning will still take a while - accordingly, no release date is known yet! Should this change, we will keep you informed.
What do you think about X-Plane 12 so far? Do you like the pictures or what would you have liked to see as a feature? Below is a collection of links that will take you to the trailers and announcements.
