Install OMSI Mods More Easily: This Is How openOMSI’s Mod Management Works!

Anyone who wants to install OMSI 2 mods has so far usually worked directly with the simulation’s folders. Maps go into the mapsfolder, vehicles into Vehicles, objects into Sceneryobjects, splines into Splines and additional fonts or sounds into the corresponding Fonts and Soundsfolders. This structure has been part of OMSI for years and is generally reliable, as long as an add-on is properly structured and all required files are present. Problems mainly arise when many mods are installed at the same time, several packages modify the same files, or it is no longer possible to clearly determine which expansion added which files.

openOMSI is specifically trying to separate this area more clearly from the actual OMSI 2 directory. To this end, the launcher has its own Mods page, through which expansions can be added. openOMSI accepts both folders and ZIP files. Mods can also be dragged directly onto the launcher window. Anyone who prefers working with files in the traditional way can also place expansions in the separate Mods folder next to openOMSI. The crucial difference lies less in the launcher’s appearance than in the fact that the original OMSI 2 installation itself does not have to be changed.

How do you install mods in openOMSI?

Instead of manually extracting a ZIP file first and then copying all of its directories into the OMSI installation, openOMSI can add the expansion through its mod management. A mod can be selected as a folder or ZIP file, or added directly via drag & and drop. The files are then stored within the openOMSI mod structure and are taken into account in addition to the normal OMSI content when the game starts.

This creates a separation between the actual OMSI installation and the expansions used specifically through openOMSI. The original installation remains unchanged. This is particularly practical for players who only want to try out openOMSI at first: there is no need to start copying new files directly into an existing OMSI installation that may have been maintained for years.

openOMSI still requires this original installation. Maps, buses and other core OMSI 2 content are not simply replaced or supplied. The launcher is connected once to the existing OMSI 2 folder and uses its contents as a basis. The additional mod files are stored separately.

What can the openOMSI Launcher do?

The launcher now does considerably more than just start the new engine. It detects or manages the OMSI installation being used, offers selection options for Map, Bus and Service and contains settings for the simulation. Updates can also be initiated through the launcher.

For mods, however, the dedicated mod page is particularly relevant. Existing mod packages can be added there more easily, without first having to manually distribute their contents among maps, Vehicles, Sceneryobjects, Splines, Fonts, Sounds and other folders.

Nevertheless, this is still not a complete app store for OMSI mods. openOMSI currently has no central library from which all community maps and buses can be downloaded automatically. You still need the actual mod file or the corresponding folder. The launcher mainly simplifies the step between a downloaded package and an added expansion.

Install OMSI Mods via Drag & and Drop

Drag & and drop clearly highlights the difference from the classic installation. An existing ZIP file can be dragged directly onto the launcher instead of first being manually searched for Vehicles, maps, Splines, Sceneryobjects, Fonts, Sounds or other directories.

This saves work, but it does not automatically solve every problem associated with an OMSI mod. If, for example, a package contains only a bus that also requires additional fonts, sounds or other dependencies, those contents still need to be present. The same applies to maps with separate object and spline packages.

An easier installation and complete dependency management are therefore two different things. openOMSI can add a mod more conveniently, but the launcher cannot create files out of thin air that are missing from a package.

Does the original OMSI 2 installation remain unchanged?

Yes. This is one of the important features of openOMSI’s mod management. The OMSI 2 folder itself does not have to be modified for the additional mod management.

This is particularly relevant for larger installations. Anyone who owns a lot of payware and freeware content can leave their existing OMSI version unchanged and manage additional openOMSI mods separately alongside it. This reduces the risk of a test with a new expansion immediately overwriting files in the normal installation.

However, this does not mean that every mod exists completely isolated from the others. Content can still depend on other content. For example, a map may require objects from a separate package. openOMSI must also be able to find these files; otherwise, they will be missing just as they are in classic OMSI.

Can the launcher automatically detect missing objects?

For now, you should not expect miracles here. A modern launcher cannot turn an incomplete mod package into a complete installation. If a map is missing certain scenery objects, splines or vehicles, that content still has to be obtained and installed.

The same applies to version problems. If a map uses a specific version of an object or a bus requires particular files, the launcher cannot automatically guarantee that the correct version is present. Incompatible scripts do not suddenly become compatible with openOMSI just because installation is more convenient.

That is precisely why mod management does not replace the project’s actual compatibility work. openOMSI can organize and add files more cleanly, but it still has to correctly interpret their contents afterward.

Does openOMSI replace classic OMSI mod managers?

At present, not entirely. The launcher already handles tasks for which OMSI itself never had an integrated interface, and the separate mod structure is a clear difference from the classic installation. Nevertheless, openOMSI is still in an early stage of development and does not yet have all the features one might expect from a comprehensive mod manager.

The basic principle is particularly interesting: mods no longer necessarily have to be mixed directly with the original installation. This makes it easier to track which expansions were added specifically through openOMSI. For testing new content or for players with an extensive OMSI collection, this could make a significant difference in the long term.

The biggest advantage may therefore not lie in the fact that every mod suddenly works with a single click. Much more important is that openOMSI creates its own layer between the original game and community content . This is precisely where mod management can be expanded in the future without having to change the old OMSI directory structure itself.

openOMSI is still under development, so the launcher’s structure and range of functions may still change. Even now, however, it is clear what approach the project is taking: the existing OMSI world should remain usable while installation and management are organized in a more modern way.

Would you rather manage your OMSI mods entirely through a launcher – or has the classic copying back and forth between Vehicles, maps and Sceneryobjects simply become part of OMSI for you by now?
