Euro Truck Simulator 2: Leeds to be added to the UK Rework as a completely new city!
Anyone driving through Great Britain in Euro Truck Simulator 2 today will not find Leeds on the map as an independent city. That will change with the major UK Rework: SCS Software has confirmed that Leeds as a new city will be added to the revised game world.
This is noteworthy because the UK Rework will therefore not simply be a more modern version of the same map. Of course, numerous existing roads, cities and landscapes will be rebuilt, but at the same time SCS is using the complete rebuild to rethink the structure of Great Britain. Leeds is one of the examples confirmed so far.
The real city is located in West Yorkshire in northern England and is one of the region's major urban centres. For the ETS2 map, it therefore closes a noticeable gap, since northern England has so far offered only a relatively limited selection of larger cities.
However, SCS has not yet presented in detail which roads, industrial areas or delivery destinations will actually be implemented within Leeds. This is precisely where one should distinguish between the confirmed city and things that will only be shown later. What is certain at the moment above all is this: Leeds will be part of the new map – how extensive the city will be in gameplay, we will only find out through further developer insights.
Nevertheless, the decision already reveals quite a bit about the philosophy behind the UK Rework. Great Britain is not simply being revised piece by piece while the old structure remains in place. SCS is effectively rebuilding the region from the ground up and can therefore also decide which cities make sense for a modern road network and which places have been missing so far.
An additional challenge here is the new map scale. The existing Great Britain has a different scale within Euro Truck Simulator 2 than mainland Europe. This will be standardised as part of the Rework. SCS therefore has to fit more details and new locations into a relatively smaller playable area.
A large city like Leeds is likely to require quite a bit of planning for precisely this reason. Naturally, a real metropolis cannot be reproduced in full in ETS2. What will matter instead is which characteristic roads, buildings and traffic areas are selected so that players get a sense of Leeds without the city taking up a disproportionate amount of space on the map.
The fact that quite a bit is being created anew fits the scope of the entire project. When the UK Rework was originally announced, SCS already explained that more than twenty map designers were involved in its early phase. Several teams are now working on different parts of England, Wales and Scotland.
Leeds is not alone in this. Other places are also being newly added or extensively changed. With Inverness a standalone city is being created in northern Scotland for the first time, while Bristol is also being newly added to the ETS2 map. These are joined by well-known landmarks such as Stonehenge and a newly built Eurotunnel.
This makes it quite clear that when the finished UK Rework arrives, players will not simply be driving the same routes on prettier roads. The selection of cities and connections is changing, and as a result, routes could later emerge that do not exist in today's Great Britain at all.
In addition, SCS is already taking the upcoming Coaches project into account with the UK Rework. The revised map is therefore not intended to work only for classic truck journeys. Tourist destinations and areas relevant to coaches can also play a role in the planning. What this will specifically mean for Leeds, however, remains open for now.
For precisely this reason, the city is likely to become interesting again in upcoming developer blogs. So far, SCS has primarily confirmed Leeds as a new city without yet publishing a detailed presentation like the recent ones for Inverness or Bristol. Once work has progressed further, considerably more details about road layouts, landmarks and potential industrial sites are therefore likely to follow.
There is still no date for the entire UK Rework. The overhaul is still in development and is later intended to be released free of charge for owners of Euro Truck Simulator 2 .
For now, Leeds is therefore mainly a small detail with rather major significance: when rebuilding Great Britain, SCS is not stubbornly sticking to the map from 2012. New cities can be added, existing structures are changing and the entire region is being planned anew. Precisely because of this, the finished Great Britain could eventually feel considerably different from the version ETS2 players have known for many years.
Are you excited about Leeds as a new city – and which place that has been missing from Great Britain so far should also be added to the map in the UK Rework?
