5,000,000 Straws of Hay – and Exactly One Needle: This Simulator Really Takes the Saying Seriously!
Some game ideas can be explained in a single sentence. Needle In A Haystack Simulator might even set a record in this category: Exactly one needle is hidden in a pile made up of 5,000,000 individual straws of hay – and we are supposed to find it.
The game from Studio Bitdot and Polden Publishing turns the proverbial nearly impossible search into a full simulation. The start is just as merciless as it sounds. The enormous pile lies before us, we initially have no tools, and every single straw could be concealing the needle we are looking for.
The pile gradually becomes a business
However, we do not necessarily have to check all five million straws with our bare hands. While searching through the pile, we find valuables alongside hay. These can be sold to buy increasingly powerful tools.
The upgrades allow larger quantities of hay to be moved and processed. The initially completely hopeless-looking manual labor is thus supposed to develop into an increasingly absurd search operation. The shop page has not yet revealed the exact range of machines and automation.
Anyone who wants to experience the completely uncompromising version can ignore all upgrades. Then there really are only us, five million individual straws and a single needle. Whether anyone will ever voluntarily see this version through to the end could become almost as interesting as the game itself.
Search together – but still find only one needle
Needle In A Haystack Simulator can be played solo, but not only solo. Online co-op has also been announced. More players and more tools may speed up sorting through the hay, but even as a team there is still only one needle. Steam does not yet state how many players may search simultaneously.
This could turn the simple basic idea into a surprisingly entertaining co-op game. One person works systematically through the pile, while others take care of found items, tools or automated processing.
An internet joke with a real game system
At first glance, the title works primarily because of its absurd number. Five million to one is immediately understandable to everyone. For a viral video, it would already be enough to push hay aside completely unsuccessfully for minutes on end.
For this to become more than a brief joke, however, the game needs a progression system that regularly opens up new possibilities. That is exactly what the sellable finds, stronger tools and later automation are intended to provide. The decisive question is therefore not only whether we find the needle, but whether the journey there remains motivating for long enough.
Needle In A Haystack Simulator is scheduled to release for PC in the fourth quarter of 2026. There is still no exact release date or confirmed price. The “Free to Play” tag visible on Steam comes from user-assigned tags and is not a reliable price confirmation.
Would you take on the real challenge without a single upgrade – or immediately try to automate the entire haystack?
