Millions of Blades of Grass Instead of a Green Surface: Lawn Mowing Simulator 2 Releases Today with Completely New Grass Simulation!

Today marks the launch of Lawn Mowing Simulator 2 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. For this purpose, Skyhook Games has completely redeveloped what is arguably the game’s most important element: An environment can now display millions of individual blades of grass, whose height and density are even supposed to influence how we drive. Is this new technology enough to make the sequel more than just a prettier lawn mower simulator?

Immediately before release, Skyhook Games is also showing the finished version in a new launch trailer. Alongside the actual mowing, it focuses on leaf work, expanding the company and the various locations.

Millions of Blades Instead of a Uniform Surface

According to Skyhook Games, the grass rendering in the first Lawn Mowing Simulator was comparatively demanding on performance. As a result, the developer had little technical room to implement other systems such as leaf blowing. The grass technology was therefore redeveloped from the ground up for the sequel.

The result is supposed to go far beyond a visual improvement. According to the developer, millions of individual blades of grass can be rendered within a game environment. Unmown areas have greater differences in height and clump formation, while flowers and weeds also grow among the grass. This should make it possible to recognize even before mowing which areas are particularly dense or tall.

That has practical consequences. Dense and tall grass can put more strain on the mower. We should therefore be able to better judge while approaching whether we need to drive more slowly or adjust the cutting height. Anyone who drives into a particularly dense section at too much speed still risks overloading the engine.

The difference between mown and unmown grass should also be much clearer. Skyhook promises cleaner lawn edges and wants to avoid the effect known from the predecessor, where cut grass sometimes appeared unusually thin. The lawn will therefore no longer be merely a green surface across which we draw our lines, but a more readable part of the actual simulation.

Eleven Locations – But Not Always the Same Garden

Lawn Mowing Simulator 2 moves its career to the United States. At launch, Skyhook Games names eleven locations, meaning more settings than the first game originally offered. Mowing takes place not only in private front yards, but also on commercial and municipal grounds.

Several locations have different jobs. At the same time, gardens can change between two visits. A later job might, for example, feature new flower beds, an installed pool or a flagpole. This is intended to ensure that familiar properties do not present exactly the same task every time we return.

In addition to the actual mowing, removing weeds and cleaning the areas are now part of everyday work. Grass trimmers help in hard-to-reach places, while the long-requested leaf blowers are now a permanent part of the game for the first time.

Tens of Thousands of Leaves and More Than One Leaf Blower

The new technical foundation enables more than just additional grass. According to the Steam description, tens of thousands of leaves can move simultaneously. These are gathered on a tarp using the leaf blower, then emptied into a trash bag and disposed of.

A rake is also available for tight spaces. Grass clippings can likewise be removed with the leaf blower. This significantly expands the process: After mowing, a job is not necessarily finished, as we may still have to work on the edges and clean the area afterward.

In this way, Skyhook Games is trying to avoid one of the concept’s biggest risks. Lawn Mowing Simulator 2 is not supposed to consist solely of repeatedly driving parallel lines across green areas of different sizes. At least on paper, the additional work steps provide more variety.

The Career Gets a Walkable Company Headquarters

The management of our own company has also been revised. Instead of navigating exclusively through menus, we receive a fully walkable 3D company headquarters. From there, we accept contracts, manage our company and expand our own fleet of machines.

The fleet includes licensed equipment from Kubota, SCAG and STIGA. Skyhook’s own brands Patterson and Knight are also returning. Alongside classic ride-on mowers, grass trimmers and leaf blowers are available. After release, the developer wants to further expand the range of equipment.

The New Grass Simulation Must Prove Itself Now

The numbers sound impressive, but millions of blades of grass alone will not determine whether mowing really feels better. What will matter is whether the different heights and densities remain clearly recognizable while driving, and whether the mower’s load responds in a comprehensible way to our speed and cutting height.

Performance is equally crucial. According to the developer, the old system was too resource-intensive and limited further ideas. The new technology therefore not only has to render more blades, but also create enough performance headroom for leaves, changing gardens and future expansions.

Lawn Mowing Simulator 2 releases today, September 23, for PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation unlock is scheduled for 13:00 UTC, or 15:00 German summer time. The exact price was not yet visible on Steam when the article was created. A free PC demo continues to be available there.
