€8.99, €19.99 or even €49.99: How expensive should a simulator DLC actually be?

A current example is provided by SubwaySim 2. The new Berlin Route DLC: U4 normally costs €8.99. A 15 percent introductory discount is currently still running at launch, bringing the expansion's price to €7.64 until September 11. In return, one of Berlin's shortest subway lines is added to the game, integrated directly into the existing Berlin map.

The U4 also shows why a simple comparison based on kilometers or stations quickly becomes difficult. The developers have now explained that the four newly built stations required many hundreds of hours of work and that the DLC, among other things, established new technical foundations for signaling systems, tunnel lighting and the direct expansion of existing maps. For players, however, what initially remains visible is what they can actually drive: a very short line.

Just one price tier higher, the calculation looks completely different. The Citybus C2 for City Transport Simulator 2026 costs €19.99. It includes four different bus variants—solo and articulated vehicles with different door configurations—as well as additional assistance systems such as blind-spot assistance, pedestrian detection, traffic-sign recognition and speed warnings.

There is no completely new game world or new city here. Instead, the value is concentrated in a vehicle pack that can be used in the existing game. Someone who drives buses almost exclusively may get significantly more playtime out of it than someone who tries the vehicle only once. This alone shows that: playtime and personal interest can change the perceived value of a DLC more than the sheer amount of content.

The difference becomes even clearer with the Vienna Expansion for City Transport Simulator 2026. It costs €49.99 and adds a new, realistically recreated Vienna map with three real lines: tram lines 37 and 38 and bus line 35A. It includes, among other things, ULF A and ULF B, bus variants for line 35A and more than 1,000 realistically recreated buildings.

The comparison within the same game is interesting here as well: the Starter Edition of City Transport Simulator 2026 currently costs €39.99, while the standalone Vienna Expansion costs €49.99, putting it above the edition itself. At first glance, that seems unusual. At the same time, according to the developer, Vienna is the largest expansion for the game so far and includes a real city with multiple lines, vehicles and an extensive new environment for the first time.

This is exactly where the real pricing question begins. Is a €49.99 DLC automatically too expensive because other expansions cost only €8.99 or €19.99? Hardly. Conversely, a lower price does not automatically mean that the value for money is better.

What matters instead is what a player actually gets for their money and how long this content remains interesting. A new route driven hundreds of times can be worth significantly more to someone than ten vehicles that disappear into the virtual garage after a short test drive. Another player, in turn, may want as much variety as possible and consider that very same route DLC too small.

That is why the frequently used comparison of “euros per kilometer” only works to a limited extent. A long section through largely similar scenery cannot automatically be compared with a few kilometers of dense city center, individually built stations or complex vehicles. At the same time, development effort must not become the sole justification: in the end, buyers care about the finished product, not exclusively the number of hours required to create it.

Perhaps that is exactly where the most difficult boundary lies. Players should not judge the price by how expensive an expansion was to produce, but by whether they personally receive enough new gameplay possibilities in return. Developers, in turn, have to set their prices so that elaborate additional content can be developed at all.

And the range is now enormous. Even in City Transport Simulator 2026, for example, the current DLC selection ranges from €0.99 for cosmetic content through €8.99 and €19.99 all the way to the €49.99 Vienna expansion. It is difficult to derive a universal “DLCs must cost X euros” rule from this.

In the end, therefore, it will probably not be the highest number on the price tag that matters, but whether scope, quality and personal value align. €49.99 can seem justified for a large expansion—and at the same time, even €8.99 can be too much if a player finds little new content in it for themselves.

What is your personal pain threshold for simulator DLCs? Is €8.99 acceptable for a small route, would you pay €19.99 for a good vehicle pack—and what would an expansion have to offer for you to spend nearly €50 on it?
