Why isn’t the U4 showing up for me? In SubwaySim 2, your train length makes the difference!
In Berlin, the U4 is a short-train line. Accordingly, the platforms are also quite short. If you are traveling in SubwaySim 2 with a train formation that is too long, the U4 will not even be offered as a suitable ride.
This is particularly noticeable at Innsbrucker Platz . In the game, only the U4 runs there. If you select a train beforehand that is unsuitable for the short platforms, Innsbrucker Platz will accordingly not appear as a suitable starting option for this ride. This can quickly create the impression that the new line is only available in the included scenarios.
However, that is not the case. The U4 can also be operated outside the scenarios—you simply have to choose a suitable train length.
The following configurations work in normal operation:
- A3L92: 1x or 2x
- Gisela: 1x
- HK: 1x
Anything beyond that is too long for regular U4 rides. The reason is not some kind of menu restriction, but quite specifically the short platforms along the route.
If you search for the ride at Nollendorfplatz instead, you can also easily overlook the U4 there. U1 and U3 services also operate there, so the U4 appears less prominently in the timetable among the other connections.
There is a little more leeway in Sandbox mode. There, the A3L92 can even be sent onto the U4 in a 3x configuration . However, that is already a very tight fit. With a fourfold A3L92 formation, it is definitively over: 4x no longer fits in the U4 stations.
This exact point is more important for the new route than one might expect at first launch. Anyone accustomed to longer trains from the other SubwaySim 2 lines and simply continuing with their previous formation can completely miss the U4 as a result.
So if the line has been “missing” for you so far, you do not need to reinstall the DLC or limit yourself exclusively to the scenarios. Take a short train, check the timetable at Innsbrucker Platz or Nollendorfplatz—and the U4 should appear there.
Did exactly this happen to you after the release, and did you initially think the U4 was only playable through scenarios? And what do you think of SubwaySim 2 taking the actual train lengths into account on the short line?
