Many Have Overlooked It: In SubwaySim 2’s U4, You Can Switch Off the Tunnel Lights Yourself!
They can be found at the tunnel entrances of the U4 stations. The developers installed dedicated tunnel light switches there, allowing you to directly change the lighting of the respective tunnel area.
Anyone who focused only on signals, the timetable and stopping points during their first journeys may therefore have easily overlooked this detail. The switches do not necessarily catch the eye immediately during normal operation and are among the small interactive elements that you are more likely to discover when you take a closer look at the stations.
Technically, however, there is more behind this than just a nice gimmick. With the U4, the tunnel lighting was reimplemented and developed from purely static environmental lighting into a genuinely controllable system.
This means that the lighting is not simply active permanently, but can actually be switched depending on the respective tunnel section. As a result, an area that remains merely decorative in many simulations gains at least a small additional degree of interactivity.
Details like these fit well with a subway simulation because they are not immediately necessary for every journey, but make the technical environment feel more believable. Those who want to can simply operate the line as usual. Those who look more closely will find additional functions that go beyond the actual operation.
The feature is also interesting because, according to the development team, the new tunnel lighting is not intended to remain exclusive to the U4 permanently. Together with the revamped signaling system, the technology is also intended to be used and retrofitted in other areas of the existing SubwaySim 2 network in the future.
When this will happen and which lines will benefit from it is still unclear. For the U4, the new system is already fully integrated and can be tried out directly.
The developers themselves are now explicitly drawing attention to the switches once again, because apparently some players did not notice them at all during the first few days. Anyone who already owns the DLC therefore has at least one good reason not to jump straight back into the cab on their next journey, but to take a quick look at the tunnel entrances first.
Have you already discovered and tried out the tunnel light switches yourself? Or have they completely escaped your notice so far as well? And would you like to see more of these small interactive details in SubwaySim 2 in the future?
