SubwaySim 2: Was the U4 just the beginning? Developers lay the groundwork for further Berlin expansions!

Until now, a new route could also have been implemented as a separate map. With the U4, SubwaySim 2 took a different approach for the first time: the expansion was connected directly to the existing Berlin network. The developers wanted to find out whether additional routes could be cleanly integrated into the existing map technically, instead of building a separate game world for every expansion.

The fact that the comparatively short U4 was selected for this was no coincidence. The compact line was intended to provide a manageable framework for implementing all the necessary processes in full for the first time. This included not only the four new stations, but also tunnels and route infrastructure, signage, materials, passenger information, timetables and scenarios. In addition, the signaling system and tunnel lighting were technically enhanced, among other things.

However, another statement by the developers is crucial for the future of SubwaySim 2: “The direct expansion of an existing map worked.” This created a technical foundation that could enable further expansions of the existing Berlin network in the future.

What routes could actually result from this remains completely open, however. A U2 or another additional Berlin line was explicitly not announced. u Bahn Sim focuses on the large-profile lines and has already partially implemented the U8. The developers are also holding back on specific future plans and merely write that they do not yet want to reveal what possibilities the new foundation opens up. After the U4, however, they can look “with a good feeling” at what still lies ahead for the team.

This point in particular could make the U4 more interesting in the long term than its initially small scope might suggest. Instead of delivering only four new stations, the DLC has also shown that the existing SubwaySim 2 world can fundamentally continue to grow. This means future routes would at least not necessarily have to be created separately from the existing Berlin setting for technical reasons.

Two technical innovations introduced with the U4 also apparently should not remain permanently limited to the new line. The team also wants to use and retrofit the revised signaling system and dynamic tunnel lighting in other areas of the existing route network in the future. When this will happen and which areas will benefit from it has not yet been determined.

This gives the U4 a second significance just a few days after its release: it is not only a short new line for SubwaySim 2, but at the same time the first successful attempt to expand the existing Berlin network directly.
