ou Don't Even Have to Drive in Bus Simulator 27: These Three Roles Are Playable
Driver, inspector or passenger: astragon and Simteract now explicitly advertise these three perspectives as one of Bus Simulator 27's features. They should not be confused with the game's three modes, however. Story, Career and Sandbox determine the broader way you play, while driver, inspector and passenger describe your current role inside the game world. Players can also leave the bus entirely and explore Felicia Bay on foot in search of landmarks and hidden collectibles.
The driver role will naturally remain at the heart of the simulation. Players operate buses and routes while dealing with passengers, in-bus events and traffic situations including accidents. Behind the driving itself is the management side of the game: creating and operating routes, managing timetables, hiring drivers, assigning lines and organising the fleet are all confirmed features.
Players who do not want to drive can instead act as an inspector. The official German PlayStation description specifically confirms that players can check passenger tickets. How deep this mechanic goes beyond that has not yet been explained in detail. astragon has not currently outlined exactly how fare evaders behave, what penalties or rewards may be involved or how frequently inspections become part of normal gameplay, so those details should remain open rather than being assumed.
The passenger role is even more unusual for a game built around buses. Official descriptions confirm that players can simply take a ride as a passenger rather than driving themselves. That could provide a very different way to experience your own routes or travel through Felicia Bay without focusing on the controls. However, the developers have not yet explained in detail whether passengers have substantial objectives of their own beyond riding and interacting within the game world.
There is another important distinction: these roles are not entirely new to the series. Back in 2021, astragon already confirmed that Bus Simulator 21 allowed players to ride as passengers or work for the company as ticket inspectors. Updates to that game later even improved the highlighting of passengers during ticket inspections. Bus Simulator 27 therefore brings these concepts forward again rather than inventing them from scratch.
The bigger question is how freely these roles will work together. Bus Simulator 27 supports solo play and cooperative multiplayer for up to four players, while Steam advertises full crossplay. Players can coordinate routes, manage their fleet and grow the company together. What has not yet been clearly detailed is whether, for example, one player can drive while another simultaneously acts as the inspector aboard that same bus and a third simply rides as a passenger. That distinction could determine whether the role system becomes a meaningful multiplayer feature or mainly a source of occasional variety.
With 45+ buses, three game modes, three playable roles and a world that can also be explored on foot, Bus Simulator 27 is clearly trying to offer more than a sequence of journeys from the driver's seat. The key question is therefore not whether passenger and inspector modes exist – we already know that idea from Bus Simulator 21 – but how much further Simteract has developed them this time.
