OMSI 2 without mod chaos: This manager keeps buses and maps outside the game folder!

The approach differs significantly from the classic OMSI method. Instead of copying every mod directly into the game folder, the OMSI 2 Mod Manager stores the extracted files in its own mod library. When a mod is activated, the program creates symbolic links in the OMSI folder. To the game, these look like normal files, but the actual data remains in the separate library.

Two paths are therefore specified on the first launch: the main OMSI 2 folder containing Omsi.exe and an empty folder for the mod library. The developer recommends creating this library on the same drive if possible. Very important: This folder must not simply be deleted later, because the actual mod files are stored there. If they are removed, the symlinks point nowhere.

ZIP, RAR and 7Z archives can be imported. The tool then analyzes the folder structure and shows which files are recognized and which are ignored. The mod initially ends up only in the library and can be activated separately.

The system becomes particularly useful when several mods modify the same file. The built-in Conflict Solver detects such overlaps, for example in textures or scripts. A Load Order can be used to specify which mod takes precedence; the mod at the very top has the highest priority.

The tool is also intended to be more cautious than classic copy and paste when overwriting existing game files. According to the project description, original files are backed up automatically when a mod replaces them. When the mod is deactivated or deleted, the manager then attempts to restore the original game object. That is helpful, but should still not be regarded as a substitute for making your own backup of a heavily modified OMSI installation.

A particularly nice additional feature is the HOF Manager. HOF files can be selected and assigned to multiple buses at the same time. Instead of manually copying the same file into numerous vehicle folders, the manager also creates symlinks for this purpose. These links can later be removed again with “Reset All”.

The project is still publicly available on GitHub. The release page marks version 1.1.4 as the current “Latest” release, and GitHub shows additional commits on master after this release. It is therefore not an archived legacy project.

However, the Windows requirements deserve careful wording. Symbolic links are a Windows feature for whose creation Microsoft documents a corresponding user right. In its current instructions, the OMSI Mod Manager itself does not explicitly require either Windows Developer Mode or running as an administrator. These two things should therefore not be presented as mandatory across the board. If creating symlinks fails because of permissions on a particular PC, that is a Windows issue, not automatically an OMSI error.

OMSI 2 Mod Manager – GitHub

All in all, the idea is quite elegant: The mods remain separate from the actual game folder, OMSI can still access them, and conflicts become visible instead of simply being silently overwritten. Anyone with a very large OMSI installation that has grown over many years should nevertheless make a backup first and initially test the manager with just a few mods. For a new or well-organized installation, however, the approach is much more interesting than the classic “drag everything into the OMSI folder and hope for the best”.

How chaotic has your OMSI folder become by now? Do you still install mods entirely via copy and paste? Would you prefer a separate mod library?
