ETS2 Has a Complete Map Editor Built In – One Command Is Enough to Launch It!
SCS states clearly in its own modding documentation that games based on the SCS engine include a built-in map editor module. The direct method is the developer console. Enter:
edit
and the editor launches. A map name can also be supplied to load a particular map directly. SCS documents the command as edit <map_name>; without a map name, the editor starts with an empty map.
To enable the console, both g_console and g_developer have to be set to 1 inside config.cfg. The console can then be opened with the ~ key by default.
SCS now also documents another official method. A shortcut to the ETS2 or ATS executable can be created and -edit added as a launch parameter. For ETS2, -edit europe can be used to open that map directly. The same tutorial also suggests -noworkshop when Workshop content should not be loaded into the editor.
The editor itself is much more powerful than the simple launch command suggests. Roads, prefabs, buildings, models, signs and terrain all have dedicated item types. Objects can be moved, rotated, copied or deleted, while the editor also includes a free camera, traffic preview, Content Browser and weather tools.
Undo and redo are supported, but SCS notes that some property-dialog changes cannot be undone with Ctrl+Z. That makes regular saves especially important when experimenting.
Ctrl+S saves the current map, while Ctrl+Shift+S opens Save As. When creating a new map, SCS's tutorial says the editor automatically creates a user_map folder inside the game's mod directory. For ETS2, that is typically located inside the game's Documents folder.
Beginners should still avoid blindly modifying the original SCS map. Starting with a test map and backing up existing projects is the safer approach. This is a genuine development tool rather than a simplified building mode.
That is what makes it so interesting: if you already own ETS2 or ATS, the main map editor is already installed. You just need to know how to find it.
Did you know ETS2 already had a complete map editor built in? Have you ever tried the edit command? Would you feel confident building your own ETS2 map?
