OMSI 2 Running Poorly or Buses Jumping? This 4GB Patch Is Worth Checking!
OMSI 2 comes from a very different technical era than today's simulators. That is noticeable not only in its graphics engine, but also in how the game handles memory.
This is where the 4GB Patch from NTCore becomes useful.
The small utility modifies x86 applications so that they are marked as Large Address Aware. On 64-bit Windows, a properly prepared 32-bit application can then access a larger virtual address space.
Microsoft documents the underlying behaviour as well: a suitable 32-bit application running on a 64-bit system can have up to 4 GB of virtual address space available to the process.
That is the real reason the patch matters for OMSI 2.
It does not simply give OMSI “4 GB of RAM”
This is a common description, but technically it is too simplistic.
The 4GB Patch does not install additional physical RAM and does not simply reserve four gigabytes of your system memory for OMSI.
Instead, it modifies the executable so that Windows can provide the application with a larger virtual address space.
That can matter considerably in OMSI. A detailed map can quickly contain huge numbers of objects, textures, vehicles, repaints, AI buses and other assets.
The larger and more complicated an OMSI installation becomes, the more relevant the limitations of an old 32-bit application can become.
Why we recommend it
Our recommendation is not based on the idea that the patch magically makes OMSI faster.
Instead, it removes a technical restriction that can become an unnecessary bottleneck in memory-heavy installations.
If you are running OMSI 2 on 64-bit Windows, there is therefore good reason to check whether your OMSI.exe has already been patched.
This is especially relevant for players using:
- large and detailed maps,
- many additional buses,
- extensive AI traffic,
- high-resolution textures,
- or heavily modified OMSI installations.
For us, the patch is better described as a technical foundation than as a conventional performance mod.
Can it fix jumping buses?
Memory problems and severe performance drops may contribute to unusual behaviour in certain OMSI situations. However, it would be inaccurate to claim that every jumping bus is caused by the address-space limitation.
OMSI can struggle for many different reasons.
These include demanding maps, high object settings, excessive AI traffic, problematic vehicles, slow loading, CPU limitations and errors in individual add-ons or mods.
Our recommendation is therefore not:
“Bus jumps = install the 4GB Patch and the problem is solved.”
It is:
If OMSI 2 is running on 64-bit Windows, the 4GB Patch should be one of the basic technical things you check first.
After that, the actual troubleshooting begins.
Does it improve FPS?
Not automatically.
The patch does not make your processor faster, increase graphics performance or modernise OMSI's underlying engine.
If OMSI is already limited by CPU performance, the patch does not make that processor faster.
If the available virtual address space is the bottleneck, however, expanding it can prevent OMSI from reaching that particular limit earlier than necessary.
That distinction is important.
The 4GB Patch is therefore not a conventional FPS booster. It changes how much virtual address space can be made available to the application.
Installing the patch
The original source is NTCore.
After downloading the utility, launch 4gb_patch.exe and select:
OMSI.exe
On a typical Steam installation, the executable can normally be found inside:
Steam\steamapps\common\OMSI 2
The program then applies the required modification.
NTCore states that the patcher automatically creates a backup of the original executable.
We would still recommend making appropriate backups when dealing with a heavily modified OMSI installation.
Use the original download
We also strongly recommend downloading the patch directly from NTCore.
Older utilities often appear on numerous download portals, mirrors and unofficial repackaged websites.
There is no reason to use those.
The 4GB Patch is a general utility for appropriate x86 applications, so there is no need to download some unknown “special OMSI version” from a third-party site.
Why does this still matter in 2026?
Because a faster modern PC does not change the fundamental architecture of OMSI 2.
Your system may contain 16, 32 or even 64 GB of RAM. That does not automatically mean that an old 32-bit application can use all of it.
That is why old software limitations can remain relevant even on very powerful modern computers.
It is one of the unusual realities of older simulators: more hardware performance does not automatically remove restrictions built into the software itself.
Our recommendation
If you regularly play OMSI 2 on a 64-bit version of Windows, we recommend checking whether the 4GB Patch has been applied.
For large installations in particular, we consider it one of the most sensible technical basics to address before diving into more complicated troubleshooting.
It is equally important not to promise more than the patch can actually do.
It does not turn OMSI 2 into a 64-bit game.
It does not repair broken maps.
It does not speed up a slow CPU.
And it does not guarantee higher frame rates.
What it does is remove one specific address-space limitation of an old 32-bit application. That is why we still consider it useful in 2026.
