Perhaps the most important innovation in Construction Simulator: Evolution would not fit on a low-loader. It does not have a diesel engine and cannot lift components weighing several tonnes. In its latest Steam announcement, “Get Hands-On in Construction Simulator: Evolution”, Astragon puts manual labor in the spotlight. For the first time in the series, we do not merely operate large construction machines – we get directly involved on site with our own character.

That changes a familiar boundary the series has maintained for years. Until now, our work has primarily consisted of bringing the right vehicle to the site, moving soil, transporting concrete or lifting heavy elements into their intended positions. Construction progress itself was then often represented through clearly defined machine tasks and completed sections appearing around us. In Evolution, we are meant to get closer to the work taking place between those large machine operations.

It does not stop with a single demolition hammer created for one particularly staged contract. The official product page confirms several tools and activities: We plaster walls, use a handheld demolition hammer, work with a shovel and pick up a nail gun. Weltenbauer provides more detail in the official PlayStation Blog, additionally mentioning the cutting of wooden elements and the construction of a wall brick by brick.

The latest presentation of manual labor therefore shows a genuine workflow instead of simply adding one tool to our inventory. Wood is cut to size and then fastened with a nail gun. Masonry does not simply appear at the press of a button; it is built and subsequently plastered. Shovelling and tasks involving freshly poured concrete are also included. Astragon is not merely promising that we can walk around the site and pick up objects. We are supposed to complete individual phases of construction with our own hands.

Its integration into regular missions is crucial. According to the developer, the manual activities are fully incorporated into contracts. They are consequently more than a small collection of isolated minigames launched through a separate menu. Excavation with a digger might be followed by preparation work on foot before we process wood, install fasteners or finish surfaces. The length and complexity of these sequences remain unknown, but the fundamental promise is considerably broader than a brief tool demonstration.

Heavy machines are certainly not disappearing as a result. According to its Steam page, Construction Simulator: Evolution is set to contain more than 180 licensed machines and attachments from over 35 brands. Caterpillar, Liebherr, JCB, SANY and Kenworth return, while Ammann, Epiroc, Sennebogen and Volvo Construction Equipment are among the new licensing partners. Its foundation therefore remains a fleet of excavators, cranes, trucks and specialist machinery. Manual labor is intended to close the gaps between their operations, not replace the machines.

That is precisely why a small nail gun could ultimately matter more to the experience than the 181st vehicle type. Large machines give us control over power and precision, but they also keep us inside the cab. When we park the excavator and enter the unfinished building ourselves, we see the result from another perspective. A wall we have personally built and plastered may feel more individual than a construction phase that completes itself after the final load of material has been delivered.

This expansion becomes even more interesting in multiplayer. Evolution supports cooperative sessions for up to four people with crossplay. The developer explicitly describes one player operating an excavator while another uses a demolition hammer or handles preparatory tasks. Co-op could consequently receive a more believable division of labor. Instead of having three players wait beside the one machine currently required or find unrelated vehicles for themselves, several roles can contribute to the same construction progress at once.

A simple “we drive machines together” session could become a small construction crew. One person lifts material, another prepares the area, a third builds or fastens elements and the fourth handles transport or demolition. Astragon has not yet explained in detail whether missions will consistently offer enough parallel tasks for all four players. The potential is nevertheless obvious: Manual labor can reduce downtime and give players different responsibilities without requiring another enormous machine for every step.

Evolution is also receiving a Quick Play mode. It allows us to select preconfigured construction activities with suitable machines and begin without prior campaign progress. That should be useful for more than quickly testing new vehicles. If manual activities are properly integrated into these scenarios too, we could deliberately start a short construction task instead of first unlocking contracts, money and machinery through the career.

The rest of the game is growing as well. Two maps with their own campaigns have been announced: Maienstein is inspired by German landscapes, while Amber Falls is based on a city in the American Midwest. Alongside manual labor, a new demolition system forms the second major gameplay pillar. Hydraulic breakers, steel shears and concrete crushers will let us dismantle buildings piece by piece with the support of more realistic destruction physics. The game is therefore moving closer to the work at both ends of a construction site: We demolish structures in a controlled manner and then build some of the new elements ourselves.

Important questions about manual labor remain unanswered before release. We do not yet know whether a carefully plastered wall will be rated differently from a hastily finished surface. Astragon has also not explained whether tools possess individual control mechanics, quality grades or consequences for mistakes. Can boards be cut incorrectly? Do bricks need to be aligned precisely? Can recurring manual work be delegated or skipped later in the game? And how comfortable will the saw, trowel and nail gun feel with a controller during longer jobs?

Those questions will determine whether manual labor becomes a substantial simulation system or repetitive busywork. Placing a few deliberate bricks can make a contract feel more tangible. Hundreds of identical actions without any meaningful decision could quickly slow it down instead. Evolution does not need to simulate every individual screw. It is more important for the new activities to offer understandable differences, visible progress and sufficient variety.

Construction Simulator: Evolution is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2026. Before then, Weltenbauer particularly needs to demonstrate how deeply these tools affect the mission flow. The idea nevertheless targets an area the series has barely used before. More than 180 machines provide scale; the shovel, trowel, saw and nail gun could provide a new sense of proximity.

The biggest evolutionary step may therefore not be found in the largest machine, but in the moment we park it. If manual labor and the vehicle fleet genuinely work together, we will no longer observe construction progress exclusively from the cab. We will become part of the building site ourselves.
