Dovetail Games announced the clearest platform change in Train Sim World history on 3 August 2026. According to the official update on supported platforms, Train Sim World titles and new TSW add-ons developed from that date onwards will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. On PC, Dovetail names Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox for PC. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are therefore no longer included in the newly developed future of the series.

The wording matters because it is more precise than an immediate, complete halt to releases. Dovetail explicitly refers to add-ons developed from 3 August onwards. Projects that began before that date could therefore theoretically still appear on PS4 and Xbox One. The company has not yet explained which announced or still unannounced routes fall on which side of that line. The statement about future core editions, however, is unambiguous: A new Train Sim World edition after TSW6 will no longer be playable on the two old consoles.

Anyone who owns TSW6 on PS4 or Xbox One will not suddenly lose their game as a result. In the official Gen 8 support FAQ, Dovetail confirms that Train Sim World 6 and previous games in the series will remain fully playable on those platforms. All content released by the cut-off date is due to remain on sale. According to Dovetail, sales covering content for the eighth and ninth console generations are also planned for the foreseeable future.

The break therefore does not run backwards through our existing collections. Old routes will not be deleted from our libraries, purchased locomotives will not be locked and TSW6 was not shut down on 3 August. The boundary concerns further development: Anyone who wants to continue driving new core titles and routes developed in the future will need a PlayStation 5, an Xbox Series S or X, or a suitable PC.

Historically, this is still a major step. PlayStation 4 launched in Europe on 29 November 2013, as Sony announced at the time on the official PlayStation Blog. According to Xbox Wire, Xbox One launched in Germany and twelve other markets on 22 November 2013. By the time Dovetail removes these platforms from future TSW development, both systems are almost 13 years old. Train Sim World itself arrived on consoles in 2018 and has therefore spent a large part of its history on this exact hardware.

Dovetail explains the decision through the technical freedom it will give its own teams and the third-party developers involved. Future content should be able to take greater advantage of current hardware, with the best possible performance and higher visual quality explicitly named as goals. This does not yet confirm specific new features, larger routes or a particular technical leap. For now, the announcement removes a technical baseline; what the developers do with that freedom will only become clear through future content.

Dovetail’s own platform overview shows how restrictive that baseline already was in TSW6. In the official TSW6 FAQ, PS4 and Xbox One are described as outputting at 1080p with graphics roughly equivalent to low or medium PC settings. Timetables may be less complex, contain less rolling-stock variety and include fewer playable or AI-only layers. The mechanical hard drives in the old consoles also produce longer loading times.

For PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Dovetail instead lists 4K output, graphics roughly comparable to high PC settings, more playable and non-playable layers and faster loading. The less expensive Xbox Series S is also among the platforms supported in the future, but according to the TSW6 FAQ it runs at 1440p and may still fall somewhat behind PS5, Series X and powerful PCs in timetable complexity and rolling-stock variety. In TSW’s case, current gen therefore does not mean that every supported platform reaches exactly the same technical level.

The differences were already clearly visible on individual TSW6 routes. According to the FAQ, PS4 and Xbox One have no additional AI layers on the Morristown Line, while the ALP-46 was removed from the regular timetable and can only be driven in scenarios. Leipzig–Dresden was reduced even more substantially on the old consoles: There are no additional AI layers, fewer playable services, no AI-only traffic and no freight services in the timetable. Such reductions show why a route developed for every generation does not automatically provide the same railway world on every platform.

Without PS4 and Xbox One, future TSW editions could theoretically make denser timetables, more vehicles displayed simultaneously, shorter loading phases or more elaborate graphics part of a shared minimum standard. However, this is a technical inference, not a confirmed feature list. Dovetail is not currently promising that every new route will be larger or that every previous restriction will disappear. The platform change creates the opportunity – whether it produces a clearly visible leap for us will become the real benchmark.

For players with a large DLC collection, the purchasing rule is almost as important as the technology. Anyone upgrading within the same console family should keep their games and add-ons. On PlayStation, an eligible purchase provides both the PS4 and PS5 versions, according to Dovetail. On Xbox, the best version for the console being used is downloaded automatically. Anyone moving from PS4 to PS5 or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S therefore does not have to repurchase their compatible TSW content.

The situation is different when changing the entire ecosystem. Anyone moving from PlayStation to PC or from Xbox to PlayStation, for example, does not receive a cross-platform transfer of their purchases. The existing collection would need to be bought again there. That can be a substantial issue in Train Sim World because numerous route and locomotive add-ons can accumulate over several years. The cheapest technical platform is therefore not automatically the cheapest upgrade in practice.

The difference is even clearer with save data. According to Dovetail, the existing in-game profile cannot be transferred from PS4 to the native PS5 version. Players can continue using the PS4 version of TSW6 and older titles on their PS5, but they start again with their profile progress in the PS5 version. The situation is more convenient on Xbox: Save data is linked to the Xbox account and can be synchronized between Xbox One and Xbox Series S|X. Progress in Mastery challenges stored through Dovetail Live is not tied to a single platform.

That creates an unusual trade for PlayStation players. Purchased content carries over to the PS5 version, but profile progress built up over many hours does not. Anyone who wants to retain it can continue using the old PS4 version on the new console, but will then miss out on the native PS5 edition and its technical advantages. Dovetail’s platform decision therefore largely solves the ownership issue, but not every consequence of upgrading.

On 25 August 2026, Dovetail intends to reveal what is next for Train Sim World during Dovetail Direct: Summer 2026. Only then may it become clearer which core title will follow TSW6 and which projects already benefit from the new platform strategy. Until then, the boundary itself is the main certainty: TSW6 remains the final core edition for PS4 and Xbox One, previously released content remains available, and newly started TSW development is concentrating on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

After almost 13 years, leaving the old console generation behind is technically understandable. For our community, however, it will only become genuine progress if we see more on the new routes than two platform logos disappearing. Dovetail must now demonstrate whether the freedom it has gained really produces denser timetables, more AI, better performance and a visibly more modern generation of Train Sim World.
