30 Minutes Late: ETS2 Cuts Your Reward – in Real Life, the Entire Delivery Appointment Could Collapse!
The headline sounds harsh, but it needs an important qualification straight away: Being 30 minutes late in real long-haul transport does not automatically mean losing a dock slot or receiving a fixed financial penalty. Some consignees may still fit the truck in, others make it wait, and some require a new booking. That is the major difference from Euro Truck Simulator 2: The game needs a clear rule, while reality consists of contracts, time windows and individual circumstances.
Update 1.60 has made the pressure of time even more visible. The new Job Details Widget displays cargo type and weight, destination, job income and the remaining job time while we drive. If we arrive late, it is reflected immediately in our delivery result and experience points; SCS’s Career History also records income, XP and on-time deliveries, among other statistics. The job then ends and we can select the next one.
Tightly timed journeys have been part of ETS2 for much longer, however. SCS introduced Steam achievements with Update 1.13 in 2014. To unlock “Just in Time!”, the official Steam description requires us to complete an urgent delivery of at least 550 kilometres with less than 30 minutes remaining. What ETS2 celebrates as an achievement would probably be a rather stressful working day for a real dispatcher.
Under German freight law, the navigation system’s estimated arrival time is not the first deciding factor. Under Section 423 of the German Commercial Code, the carrier must deliver within the agreed delivery period. If no period was agreed, the relevant period is the time that could reasonably be allowed to a diligent carrier in the specific circumstances. If Google Maps estimates 14:00 and the truck arrives at 14:03, that does not automatically mean that a legally relevant delivery period has been exceeded.
If exceeding that period actually causes damage, the carrier can in principle be liable under Section 425 of the German Commercial Code. This is not the same as a flat late-delivery charge. Recoverable damage must actually have occurred, while the cause and further requirements also matter. Under Section 426, liability may be excluded to the extent that the delay resulted from circumstances which the carrier could not avoid even by exercising the utmost care and whose consequences could not be prevented. But this does not mean “traffic jam equals no liability”: Whether congestion was foreseeable, sufficient reserve time was planned and the dispatch team reacted appropriately is a question for the individual case.
The strongest figure appears in Section 431(3) of the German Commercial Code: Liability for exceeding the delivery period is generally limited to three times the freight charge. If the freight payment is €2,000, for example, this general statutory liability ceiling would mathematically be €6,000. This expressly does not mean that a 30-minute delay costs €6,000. The rule does not simply award the maximum amount when no corresponding damage exists. In cases of intent or equivalent reckless conduct with awareness that damage would probably result, the liability limits may also cease to apply under Section 435.
The 21-day rule is also surprising: Under Section 438(3) of the German Commercial Code, claims arising from exceeding the delivery period generally expire if the consignee does not notify the carrier of the delay within 21 days after delivery. The real case therefore does not necessarily end at the dock. The claims question may only begin afterwards.
For a cross-border journey, the CMR – the Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road – may apply instead of these national German rules. Under Article 19 CMR, delay occurs when the agreed time limit is exceeded or, without an agreed limit, the carriage takes longer than could reasonably be allowed to a diligent carrier. If the claimant proves damage resulting from the delay, compensation under Article 23(5) is generally limited to the carriage charges. Article 30 generally requires a written reservation within 21 days after the goods were placed at the consignee’s disposal for compensation for late delivery.
This creates two clearly separate orders of magnitude: In the German Commercial Code scenario, the general limit is three times the freight charge; in an international CMR delay case, it is generally the freight charge itself. A declared special interest in delivery, different legal circumstances and qualified misconduct can change the assessment. This article therefore cannot replace an examination of a particular transport – and a claim is not automatically directed personally at the employed driver.
A contractual penalty must also be distinguished from damages. It does not arise merely because a truck is late, but requires a corresponding contractual basis. Likewise, losing a dock window does not automatically create a statutory damages case. The two can be connected, but they must not be blended into a universal formula such as “30 minutes equals €500”.
For our driver, another consequence is often much more immediate: waiting. Time-slot systems assign fixed periods for loading or unloading. The German Logistics Association explains that while these systems can improve dock planning, delays may produce longer waiting times, additional costs and, depending on the agreement, penalty payments for transport companies. The precise response varies by site. A late truck might join a queue, fit into a gap that unexpectedly becomes available or require a new appointment. A publicly documented delivery rule from Switzerland, for example, shows that rescheduling for another day is possible. It is a practical example, not a universal European rule.
Let us therefore imagine our journey from Hamburg to Milan. We carry 24 tonnes of goods and have a delivery window from 08:00 to 09:00 on Tuesday. On Monday evening, we enter a massive traffic jam, after which the permitted driving time is exhausted. In ETS2, we might consider simply driving the final 70 kilometres before the timer turns red. In reality, the customer appointment is not a general free pass.
Article 12 of Regulation 561/2006 permits only narrowly limited departures. These include reaching a suitable stopping place to the extent necessary for safety. Under certain exceptional conditions, limited extensions are also possible to return home or to the employer’s operational centre for a weekly rest period. A lost delivery window alone does not, however, generally allow the driver to continue for another one or two hours to reach the customer. The goods may be urgent – that does not make the driving-time rules optional.
The sensible response is therefore usually communication: The driver reports the delay to dispatch, which calculates a new estimated arrival time and informs the customer or consignee. Perhaps the slot is moved. Perhaps the truck waits several hours. Perhaps it must return the following day. At the same time, working and vehicle schedules shift, the next job may be endangered, the tractor and trailer remain occupied, and time-sensitive goods can create further difficulties. A production stoppage or a substantial claim are possible extreme consequences in the relevant supply chains, but they are by no means the automatic result of every late arrival.
ETS2 shows us a timer, calculates the result and closes the job. Reality creates more of a chain reaction: a new ETA, phone calls, dock planning, waiting time, the next job and perhaps only later a liability question. That could inspire a deeper, purely hypothetical gameplay system. Urgent jobs could have fixed dock slots, different tolerances and long-term reliability ratings. We could report a new ETA, weigh up alternative routes or lose a follow-up job. Refrigerated cargo and just-in-time customers could pay more but tolerate less delay. The driving-time limits would still not simply disappear.
SCS has not announced any of this. Yet the design question is compelling: What if the most lucrative ETS2 job were also the riskiest? “Urgent” would then mean more than less time and a higher reward; it would require genuine transport planning. In reality, a delay is rarely just one red monetary deduction – it is often the beginning of a logistical chain reaction.
Should ETS2 simulate real dock time slots and waiting times for urgent deliveries – or would that level of realism eventually become annoying? Would you reject a particularly lucrative job if a narrow delivery slot could also endanger the next contract? Should a delay reported in good time be rated differently in the game from avoidable poor planning?
