3 completed tram routes – but still no Munich in CTS: Why the old map would almost need to be rebuilt!

At first glance, the situation appears difficult to understand. TramSim Munich already contains three recreated tram routes: route 23 between Münchner Freiheit and Schwabing Nord, route 27 between Sendlinger Tor and Petuelring, and route 28 between Sendlinger Tor and Scheidplatz. The roads, tracks, stops, buildings and R2.2b tram therefore already exist.

However, City Transport Simulator is not technically a simple expansion of TramSim. CTS introduced extensive changes to AI and spawning, AI routes, passengers, ticketing, vehicle functions, performance and stability. Buses and trams must also operate within the same overall system.

The Munich map could therefore not simply be copied and released. Roads, tracks, stops, traffic lights, AI paths, passenger positions and other technical elements would need to be adapted to CTS and tested again. The existing data would provide a foundation, but not a finished CTS map.

Visual quality creates another major obstacle. ViewApp explains that many older Munich assets no longer meet the standard the studio intends to establish in City Transport Simulator. The new Vienna map raises that standard considerably, with more than 1,000 newly created buildings, dedicated Vienna vehicles and numerous new environmental assets.

Munich would therefore require more than updated textures. Many buildings, materials, road objects, lighting elements and parts of the environment would need to be reworked or completely rebuilt. What initially sounds like a quick conversion would become an extensive remaster.

That leads directly to the question of development resources. Should a large part of the team spend months modernising a previously released city, or should it invest that time in completely new maps, vehicles and gameplay systems? ViewApp has currently chosen new content.

Vienna is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. The DLC includes two tram routes, one bus route, ULF A, ULF B, a Vienna-specification Citybus C2 and more than 1,000 newly created buildings. An expansion of the Tramau map featuring interurban services is also planned for 2027.

Development is not expected to end there. ViewApp has already indicated that further products and projects will follow Vienna and the interurban expansion. Those new additions currently have priority over an extensive rebuild of TramSim Munich.

Munich is therefore not fundamentally impossible. However, the existing map would only serve as a starting point. To release it in City Transport Simulator, ViewApp would need to rebuild so much of its technical and visual content that it would almost become a completely new Munich map.

The map already exists – but it is not in a condition that allows it to be copied, quickly adjusted and released as a CTS DLC.

Should ViewApp rebuild Munich for CTS despite the enormous amount of work, or focus on developing completely new cities?
