Better to stop three days early than release unfinished: Did Dovetail make the right decision?

The Tadami Line was no longer an early project sitting somewhere on a long-term roadmap. Dovetail had already fully presented the 88-kilometre route with 28 stations, the KiHa 40, five scenarios and a €35.99 price. Its store page was online, with release planned for July 30.

The stop followed on July 27. According to Dovetail, early testers had reported areas where performance was lower than expected. The route will receive additional development time, while a new date will only be announced once the optimisation schedule is reliable.

The main question has a clear answer: Dovetail was right to stop the release. A known technical problem does not improve simply because an announced date is approaching. Selling a DLC despite confirmed performance issues transfers the risk to customers and knowingly accepts negative reviews, refunds and lasting damage to trust.

However, the last-minute delay is not an unqualified success for quality assurance. When significant performance problems only become a decisive obstacle after the product reveal, price announcement and release promotion, it is reasonable to ask why the technical approval process did not identify them earlier. Applying the emergency brake was correct – but the project should never have been moving towards launch at that speed.

Keeping the date purely for marketing reasons would have been particularly damaging. The Tadami Line is the first Japanese and first Asian route in Train Sim World. Its release will therefore shape not only the reception of an ordinary DLC, but also the franchise’s first impression of an entirely new region.

A delay creates disappointment for several days or weeks. A technically poor release remains permanently visible through reviews, videos and community discussions. At €35.99, players can reasonably expect the route not only to look complete, but also to operate reliably across its announced platforms.

The decisive limit is therefore not a specific number of days. A DLC may still need to be stopped only hours before launch when a serious issue becomes known. What would be unacceptable is hiding the problem or proceeding with the sale regardless. The publisher must then explain how the process reached such a late intervention.

Dovetail therefore deserves credit for the final decision, but not complete absolution for the process leading up to it. The late delay was better than an unfinished release. Truly effective quality assurance would have triggered that delay much earlier.
