Hard Worker has a concept that initially appears almost too large for a single game. Instead of focusing on long-haul trucking, farming, construction work or vehicle maintenance, REGION 23 wants to unite all these areas in one shared open online world. Career progression, houses, fishing, evenings with music and life alongside other players are also part of the plan.

The official Steam page confirms long-haul transport with heavy trucks, farming with tractors and combine harvesters, cooperative construction work and warehouse tasks. Vehicles will also need to be refuelled, maintained and repaired. After work, we can spend our earnings on new equipment, a countryside house, fishing gear or musical instruments.

The scale is therefore known. The much more important question is now: How closely are these areas actually connected?

The strongest example so far comes from farming. According to the game description, a combine operator can transfer harvested grain directly into another player’s truck. This creates a genuine connection between two activities. The farmer produces something that is then taken over and transported by a driver. The two players are not merely working on the same map by coincidence; they are completing a job together.

Similar ideas can be seen in construction crews that are supposed to erect new structures together. A tow truck can also pull a stranded vehicle out of a ditch. Long-haul drivers will be able to talk over the radio during long night journeys. These examples show that REGION 23 does not understand cooperation as merely driving around together.

However, they do not yet prove the existence of a fully connected player economy. It remains unclear what happens to the transported harvest at its destination. Will it be accepted, processed or sold by other players in a warehouse? Will construction materials first need to be delivered to building sites by truck drivers? Will completed buildings permanently change the world? Will mechanics be able to offer services to other players, or will everyone simply maintain their own vehicle?

These questions will determine whether Hard Worker works in the long term. In the best case, a production chain emerges: one player produces goods, another transports them, someone handles warehouse logistics and a shared company invests the profit in vehicles, buildings or new contracts. Every profession would then have a visible purpose within the same economy.

In the weaker scenario, we receive several largely separate minigames. The farmer completes a farming mission, the trucker follows an independent contract and the construction worker works on an unrelated building site. Everyone may be on the same map, but they have little economic connection. That would technically be multiplayer, but not yet a believable working world.

The announced career ladder also needs to offer more than increasing numbers. Everyone is supposed to begin with small tasks such as hauling waste, assisting on construction sites or running simple errands. Later, we can become foremen, managers and eventually directors. This progression only becomes interesting if our responsibilities change. A director would need to distribute contracts, acquire materials, manage vehicles or employ other players. If the title is merely another level with better pay, the system will quickly lose its appeal.

The leisure activities could become a surprisingly important part of the game. Fishing, a shared campfire, a guitar or a personal house do not directly drive the economy. However, they create places and reasons for players to meet after a shift. In an MMO, this social layer can create more loyalty than the next automatically generated transport contract.

These moments must remain interesting over time, however. A campfire may feel atmospheric during the first meeting but become little more than decoration after the tenth evening. Shared houses, company accounts, regular events, group progression or special contracts for entire crews could turn this into a long-term system. Such deeper features have not yet been confirmed.

Hard Worker also faces a difficult balancing act. If every profession depends too heavily on the others, missing players could block a contract. If every activity works completely alone, nobody needs the other professions. The game therefore needs to reward cooperation without constantly forcing it—perhaps through better cooperative contracts, flexible roles or alternative solutions when only a few players are online.

The project does not need to beat ETS2, Farming Simulator and a construction simulator simultaneously in their respective levels of depth. That would hardly be realistic. Hard Worker’s unique strength could come from making all these activities accessible enough while connecting them far more closely. The decisive factor would then not be the most perfect truck physics or the most extensive farming system, but the feeling that our work is visibly important to other players.

It is not yet possible to judge whether REGION 23 will achieve this goal. Hard Worker has no confirmed release date, no known price and no published system requirements. The cooperative examples shown so far are promising, but they do not yet explain the entire economy.

The next decisive preview should therefore not show another individual profession. We need to see one complete contract from beginning to end: from production through transport and processing to the payment of several participating players. Only then will we know whether Hard Worker is creating a genuinely connected working world—or whether its enormous scope is primarily impressive on paper.
