Build routes, block your friends and connect cities: The famous Ticket to Ride board game is also available on Steam!
Thank you for your understanding!
Ticket to Ride is not a traditional railway simulator. You do not sit inside a driver’s cab, learn signalling systems or operate complicated train equipment. Instead, you look down at a large map and gradually build your own route network. This makes the game suitable not only for railway enthusiasts, but also for families, casual players and anyone looking for an accessible strategy game.
The basic idea is easy to explain. At the beginning, you receive destination tickets showing two cities that need to be connected. To do so, you collect train cards in different colours. Once you have enough matching cards, you can claim an available route on the board and place your own trains along it. Completed connections earn points, while fulfilled destination tickets increase your final score. If a planned connection remains unfinished at the end, its points are deducted instead.
That is where the real appeal begins. The rules are simple, but every decision can have consequences. Do you collect one more card or immediately secure an important connection? Do you claim a longer route for more points, or will another player block the only useful path first? Ticket to Ride does not rely on complicated menus. Instead, small decisions gradually develop into major problems during each match.
The original board game by Alan R. Moon is officially designed for two to five players aged eight and above. A typical match lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. Ticket to Ride therefore belongs to the group of games that can be explained relatively quickly while still offering different tactical possibilities after many sessions.
The new digital adaptation was released in November 2023 and is developed and published by Marmalade Game Studio. It changes little about the fundamental gameplay, but handles many organisational tasks automatically. Cards are dealt by the game, occupied routes are clearly marked and points are calculated immediately. This can make the first few matches much easier for players who have never experienced the board game.
Several different modes are available. In single-player, you compete against AI opponents and can experiment with strategies without time pressure. Online play includes public matchmaking and private games with friends. Asynchronous matches can even continue across several days: you take your turn and receive a notification when it is time to play again. The Steam version also supports local shared-screen play and cross-platform multiplayer. A free Marmalade Bubble account is required for online play.
The base game uses the familiar North America map. However, the digital edition has already grown considerably. Steam currently lists 13 additional pieces of content, including Europe, Germany, the Nordic countries, India, Switzerland, Japan, Africa and Poland. Some maps mainly change the region, while others introduce their own rules and therefore alter the usual strategy. These expansions are sold separately and are not all included with the base game.
Players who already own the physical board game will therefore not necessarily receive a completely new experience. The digital advantage is convenience: no cards need to be shuffled, no trains need to be sorted and unfinished games do not have to remain spread across a table for several days. Online play also allows friends in different locations to compete with one another.
At the same time, the digital version does not automatically replace the shared experience around a real table. Placing miniature trains on the board and reacting directly to other players feels different. The Steam version is therefore less of a clear replacement and more of an additional way to play Ticket to Ride alone, remotely or across longer distances.
Steam reviews have not been completely consistent. The overall rating is currently listed as “Mixed”, while more recent reviews have been “Very Positive”. This suggests that the digital adaptation has been received more favourably over time, although not every player is satisfied with every technical or design decision.
Even so, the central gameplay remains highly accessible. Anyone expecting a detailed railway simulator will not find it here. But players who enjoy planning, collecting cards, blocking friends and desperately trying to connect two distant cities before the game ends may find an experience that works almost regardless of prior knowledge.
Do you already know Ticket to Ride as a board game, or would you try the digital version first?
