No interurban route in 2026? Why CTS 2026 will probably only take Tramau into the countryside in 2027!

Many players had hoped that City Transport Simulator 2026 would still receive a first real interurban route this year. The wish is completely understandable: Tramau currently feels strongly urban. A route out into the countryside would immediately change the feel of the game. Fewer traffic lights, longer driving sections, quieter outer areas, new stop types and maybe even a section where the StadtRegioTram can finally really stretch its legs.
According to the current state, however, exactly that will probably not happen in 2026. The decisive point is that map development is currently focused on Vienna. All available map resources are needed for the real Vienna map. And that is also logical, because Vienna is not a small additional area, but a large expansion with bus and tram content, new buildings, real city atmosphere and its own vehicle adjustments.
The roadmap fits this assessment exactly. The Vienna Bus and Tram Map and the Flexity Graz are listed for Q4 2026. The new Tramau map, however, is no longer in the 2026 block, but in the 2027 outlook. It also states there that an upcoming map expansion is planned for 2027, which is intended to bring interurban routes into the game for the first time.
That makes the direction quite clear: 2026 is the Vienna year. 2027 will be the Tramau interurban topic. For players waiting for a more rural Tramau expansion, that is of course disappointing at first. At the same time, it is better to set expectations clearly instead of building hype now that cannot be met later.
But the main reason is not only the schedule. An interurban route is technically much more complex than simply laying a few tracks to the edge of the city. From the outside, it sounds simple: take Tramau, build a road out of the city, place a few fields, trees and stops next to it, and done. In practice, however, there is much more attached to it.
A believable interurban route first needs a different environment. City assets are not enough for that. It needs open landscapes, outer areas, smaller towns, different road spaces, new vegetation, different lighting, different viewing distances and stops that do not simply feel like city stops with fewer houses around them. Otherwise, it does not feel like an interurban route, but only like city traffic with a green border.
Then there is the driving logic. An interurban line lives from longer sections and larger distances. That affects timetables, intervals, AI traffic, stop occupancy, passenger distribution and balancing. If such a route still has traffic lights or dense traffic junctions every few metres, the interurban feeling is gone immediately. At the same time, the route must not feel empty or meaningless either.
It becomes even more complex with the big wish many players have: single-track sections. That sounds perfect for an interurban tram, but technically it is a topic of its own. Single-track does not just mean leaving out one track. It requires passing loops, meeting rules, signals or other safety systems so that player vehicles and AI trams do not block each other.
This is exactly where it becomes clear why this cannot simply be created on the side. A single-track route needs logic that recognises when a section is clear, when a tram has to wait and how timetables still work. Then there are special cases: What happens when there is a delay? What happens if the player is too early or too late? How does the AI react? How do you prevent deadlock situations? This is not a small decoration feature, but an operating system within the map.
Performance and stability also play a role. At first glance, an interurban route may sound less demanding than a dense inner city because fewer buildings have to be displayed. But it creates different challenges: longer sightlines, more landscape, larger connected sections, more vegetation and new transitions between city and outer area. Especially on consoles and weaker PCs, such an expansion has to run cleanly.
That is why it is understandable that ViewApp and NPLAY are not simply squeezing this topic in between Vienna, vehicles, updates and bug fixes. A half-finished interurban line would not help anyone. If it comes, it has to drive and feel truly different from the current city traffic. And that takes time.
Important, however: the topic has not been cancelled. Quite the opposite. The outlook for 2027 is exactly the important point of hope. That is where the Tramau map expansion or interurban line is listed. This means the wish is not off the table, it is simply apparently no longer being implemented in 2026.
For CTS 2026, this is ultimately a question of priorities. This year, the focus is on Vienna. The real map DLC is large, visible and part of the 2026 content. Tramau will then likely continue to grow later. Precisely because the interurban line is one of the most requested features, it would make sense not to release it as a rushed addition, but as a proper expansion with its own driving feel.
