Why CTS 2026 crashes on Xbox: What is behind the out-of-memory crashes!
Thank you for your understanding!
City Transport Simulator 2026 still has crashes, especially on Xbox. For players, that is of course frustrating, especially when it happens in the middle of a route, during a service or in a longer session. At the same time, it is important to understand what kind of crashes are often being discussed here: According to the developer, many Xbox crashes are so-called out-of-memory crashes.
In simple terms, this means that the game needs more memory at a certain moment than the console has available or usable. When that happens, the system may close the process or the game may crash. This is not the same as a classic bug where, for example, a specific button, a specific menu or one particular vehicle always triggers the same error.
Especially in a game like CTS 2026, memory usage can come from many individual building blocks. Vehicles, textures, buildings, AI traffic, passengers, sounds, weather, lighting, user interface, route data and effects all need to be kept in memory, loaded or released again. The denser and more complex a scene becomes, the more the console can be stressed.
That is why an out-of-memory crash can also be harder to pin down than a normal error. Sometimes it happens after a longer play session. Sometimes in especially dense areas. Sometimes only when many systems are active at the same time. That is exactly what makes troubleshooting complicated: It is not always enough to repair one broken spot. Often, memory has to be saved in many different areas.
This does not mean the developer cannot do anything. On the contrary: This is exactly where optimisation begins. Textures can be loaded differently, objects can be managed more efficiently, data that is no longer needed must be removed from memory more cleanly, vehicles and environments can be technically improved without looking visibly worse. The goal is always the same: The game should need less memory while still looking good and running reliably.
However, there is still a limit. A console only has a certain amount of memory. That limit cannot be increased by a patch. The developer can only try to work better within that limit. That is why it matters to say that the developer can only do so much: Of course, optimisation is the developer’s responsibility. But if the cause of the crash is memory shortage, then it is not about a single switch, but about an ongoing technical balancing process.
The balance is especially difficult. If everything were simply reduced drastically, crashes might perhaps become less frequent more quickly, but the game would look worse or lose detail. The better way is much more demanding: checking step by step which systems use too much memory, where data is loaded twice, which content can be processed more efficiently and which optimisation does not create visible drawbacks.
That is exactly why crashes like these often do not disappear completely with one single update. They are reduced step by step. One patch can ease certain memory issues, another improves other areas, and a later one optimises more components again. That is not a pleasant situation for players, but technically it is understandable.
It is also important to say: Players are still allowed to criticise the crashes. If a game crashes, that is a real problem. Especially on console, many expect a game to run stably because the hardware and platform are clearly defined. The explanation out of memory does not remove the frustration. It only explains why the solution is more complex than “please just fix it quickly.”
Overall, the situation has two sides. Yes, the Xbox crashes in CTS 2026 are a problem that still needs work. At the same time, an out-of-memory crash is not a simple error that can always be clearly fixed immediately. The developer can optimise, save memory and improve stability – but cannot remove the memory limit of the console.
For players, this means further performance and stability updates remain important. For the developer, it means every saved memory area can help reduce crashes. And for the community, it means criticism is justified, but the technical cause is much more complicated than it often looks from the outside.
