Construction Simulator was released on Steam in September 2022 and was developed by weltenbauer. Software Entwicklung GmbH and published by astragon Entertainment. At first glance, the concept is quickly explained: We drive construction machines, take on contracts and work through different tasks on construction sites. Looking more closely, however, there is a much larger package behind it.

The numbers show that the game has achieved considerable reach within the simulation scene. According to SteamDB, the all-time peak was 17,365 concurrent players. On top of that, the game currently has over 11,000 positive Steam reviews. For a construction site simulator, that is a strong figure, because the topic is much more specific than classic open-world, racing or action games.

In terms of content, Construction Simulator focuses on building up your own construction company. Players do not simply start with one machine, but progress through contracts, income and a growing vehicle fleet. The Steam page lists more than 90 contracts across two maps inspired by landscapes in Germany and the United States. This means it is not just about individual construction sites, but about a whole structure of projects, vehicles and progression.

The machine fleet is especially important. According to the Steam page, Construction Simulator offers more than 80 machines from official licensing partners. These include well-known construction and commercial vehicle brands such as Caterpillar, Liebherr, MAN, Mack Trucks, Scania, Bobcat, Bomag, CASE, DAF, Doosan, Palfinger, Wacker Neuson and several other manufacturers. This is exactly what makes the game tangible for many simulation fans: It is not about nameless fictional vehicles, but about machines clearly based on real-world counterparts.

The variety of tasks is also a central part of the game. Players excavate, load, transport, operate cranes, compact surfaces and build. The appeal comes less from speed and more from processes: picking up material, bringing it to the construction site, using machines correctly, completing contracts and expanding the company with the money earned. Anyone who enjoys work processes, heavy equipment and visible progress will find the core of the game here.

There is also the multiplayer aspect. Construction Simulator supports online co-op, allowing construction sites to be completed together. This fits the gameplay especially well in larger contracts, because different machines and work steps can be used in parallel. For many players, this is an important difference from purely solo simulations.

The comparison within our simulation community is also interesting. Construction Simulator shows that successful simulations do not necessarily have to be only about buses, trucks, trains or farming. Construction sites can also reach a large audience when machines, brands, progression and task structure work together. The 17,365 concurrent players show that this topic has significantly more pull than one might expect outside the construction and machine fanbase.

In the end, the success of Construction Simulator is fairly easy to understand: The game combines a clear construction site theme with many machines, licensed brands, co-op options and a progression structure. It is therefore not a small niche title that merely exists on the side, but one of the visible names in the field of work and machinery simulations.

Have you already played Construction Simulator yourself? What interests you more: excavators, cranes, trucks or special machines?
