More FPS for under seven euros? Lossless Scaling tested with OMSI 2!

Lossless Scaling is not a classic graphics mod, not a tuning preset and not a replacement for a new graphics card. The tool works differently: It overlays the running game, generates additional intermediate frames with LSFG 3 Frame Generation and makes the game appear noticeably smoother. This becomes especially interesting in games that do not offer modern frame generation themselves – exactly the case with many simulations, older titles and projects that are no longer technically fresh.

In the practical test, the benefit became especially clear where simulations are playable, but not truly smooth. One of the tested titles was OMSI 2 with the Thüringer Wald add-on on a system with a Ryzen 5 7500F, RTX 4070 and 32 GB RAM. Especially in demanding areas such as the ZOB in Lichtentanne or tighter old-town sections, the frame rate without Lossless Scaling was around 30 to 40 FPS. That is playable, but anyone who knows OMSI also knows: There is often a whole world between “it runs” and “it feels clean” in this simulator.

With frame generation enabled, the image felt noticeably calmer. The displayed frame rate could be visibly increased in the test, and in many situations the game then ran at around 50 to 60 FPS. This makes a difference especially in driving feel. Turns, intersections, camera movements and longer drives through towns feel less sluggish. Especially in OMSI 2, which still struggles in certain places despite modern hardware, this effect is immediately noticeable in everyday use.

But it is important to say: Lossless Scaling does not repair the engine. If OMSI 2 briefly reloads, if a tile stutters or if the simulator freezes for a moment, the tool does not magically remove these problems. A real still image does not become clean gameplay. Small visual artifacts can also occur after short freezes. They are not constantly noticeable, but they can be seen if you look closely or if the game is already running unevenly.

In practice, it is worth taking a few minutes before starting. The game has to run in windowed mode or borderless fullscreen mode. Exclusive fullscreen is not the ideal operating mode for Lossless Scaling. The GPU should also not already be working at its absolute limit, because frame generation itself needs performance. So if you are already constantly close to 100 percent GPU load, you should first lower some in-game settings or cap the frame rate to a stable value.

This point is crucial. Lossless Scaling works best when the base frame rate is stable. It makes more sense to cap a game cleanly at 30, 40 or 50 FPS and generate a smoother image from that than to forcefully inflate a heavily fluctuating frame rate. So the tool is less of a “one-click miracle” and more of a small practical utility: strong when set up correctly, sometimes uneven when set up poorly.

With OMSI 2, there is also one additional quirk worth knowing. If you switch into the ALT menu, settings or certain external windows, it is best to briefly disable Lossless Scaling. Otherwise, the tool may no longer scale the actual game, but another window instead. That is not a disaster, but it takes some getting used to in everyday use. How this behaves in detail with tools such as Busbetrieb-Simulator or OmniNavigation was not fully tested here.

In more modern or more stable simulations, handling is usually easier. In games such as Euro Truck Simulator 2 or American Truck Simulator, Lossless Scaling is especially interesting if you play with higher graphics settings, many mods, large maps or limited hardware. There, the tool feels less like a rescue solution for an old engine and more like an additional comfort lever: You gain visual smoothness without immediately having to reduce graphics settings heavily.

That is why Lossless Scaling can also make sense beyond OMSI 2. Older simulators, indie games, emulators, management games with 3D views or titles without built-in frame generation often benefit more than brand-new AAA games that already include DLSS, FSR or other solutions. This is where the actual value lies: Lossless Scaling is especially useful where the game itself does not offer a modern solution.

Our purchase recommendation is therefore clear: Yes, Lossless Scaling is worth it, especially for PC players who play many simulations, older games or technically difficult titles. For under seven euros, you do not get a perfect miracle tool, but a surprisingly useful utility that can immediately add noticeably more smoothness to the image in suitable games. Anyone unsure can try it through Steam and refund it under the usual Steam refund conditions if it does not fit.

The most important advice is: Do not just buy it, start it and hope. It is better to spend a few minutes per game testing, capping the base FPS, comparing frame generation modes and focusing on smoothness rather than just high numbers. Then Lossless Scaling becomes not a marketing promise, but a genuinely useful tool for everyday simulation use.

In the end, Lossless Scaling should not be seen only as an OMSI helper. Yes, OMSI 2 benefits visibly, because every bit of smoothness is welcome there. But the bigger point is different: For many PC simulations, older games and titles without built-in frame generation, this small tool is an affordable way to make better use of existing hardware. And that is exactly why Lossless Scaling remains a clear recommendation for anyone regularly playing demanding or older simulators on PC.
