The Tram: Have we almost completely overlooked this potential tram simulation hidden gem?
The Tram is not currently a large simulation project featuring numerous licensed vehicles, a famous city, and an extensive marketing operation. The game is being developed and published by TGR Group, a small team with roots in the modding community. The developers describe the project as entirely self-funded and intend to launch it in Early Access during 2026. However, no specific day or month has been announced. There is currently no publicly playable demo or open playtest either. This is precisely why The Tram has been easy to overlook—and why it deserves a closer examination.
Only one classic tram is expected to be driveable at launch: the T3. Additional models are planned during Early Access, but none of them have yet been officially named. Instead of rapidly assembling a large fleet, the team wants to develop the fundamental vehicle systems around a single car first. Confirmed features include pedal controls, five power positions, and a simulation of the electromechanical PCC accelerator. The motors do not simply receive a fixed amount of power immediately. The accelerator moves progressively through its switching positions and regulates the current according to the selected pedal input. Simulated power circuits, braking, vehicle weight, and inertia are also planned.
This vehicle choice fits the announced period particularly well. The fictional city is inspired by Central and Eastern Europe in the mid-2000s. In many places, this era was not a clearly separated chapter: older high-floor cars from previous decades, modernised existing vehicles, and new low-floor technology operated alongside one another on the same networks. Stops were being rebuilt while worn tracks could still be found only a short distance away. Modern passenger information systems met older vehicles and urban districts still strongly shaped by the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. However, The Tram currently confirms only the T3. We cannot automatically assume that further classic, modernised, or modern vehicles will be included simply because of this historical setting.
The team is also deliberately avoiding an exact recreation of a real city. Instead, it is building a fictional world containing panel housing estates, suburbs, forest sections, industrial districts, and a historic centre. The first routes are intended primarily to connect outer residential areas with industrial zones, partly using reserved tracks. This may provide less immediate recognition than a famous real route, but it allows the developers to combine typical elements from several cities. Whether the world will feel convincing or merely assembled from familiar components cannot be judged before a playable version becomes available.
Two routes are planned for the Early Access launch. However, the official Steam information currently contains a notable contradiction regarding their size: the English product page states a total length of approximately 15 kilometres, while the German version claims around 20 kilometres. Until the developers clarify this discrepancy, neither figure should be treated as final. The only definite point is that The Tram will begin with a deliberately compact scope. The map, network, and fleet are intended to expand later.
The journeys will involve more than simply moving the tram from one stop to another. We are expected to follow a timetable, stop accurately at platforms, carry passengers, and monitor their comfort. According to the developers, the passenger system will begin with a relatively simple implementation and gain more depth during development. Its planned relationship with the time of day is particularly interesting: in the morning, passenger flows are expected to move from residential districts towards workplaces, reversing direction in the evening. Road traffic is also planned, although its initial implementation will be relatively basic and partly decorative.
The announced environmental conditions extend considerably further. Season, temperature, weather, and track condition are intended to influence the vehicle’s behaviour. Slippery rails, frost, worn curves, gradients, and speed restrictions will require players to adjust their driving style. Even the Sun, Moon, stars, and changing length of the day are calculated according to astronomical rules. Early winter duties will remain dark for longer, while summer shifts may begin in the morning light. The Moon’s phase is even expected to influence nighttime brightness. These are notable details for a project beginning with such a restrained number of vehicles and routes.
The Tram is therefore not promising a vast public transport company on its first day. A career mode, economy system, conductor mode, additional regions, and further trams belong to its longer-term plans. Modding is initially expected to focus on repaints and small interior customisations; custom vehicles and maps are being considered technically, but are not currently a priority. Following the Early Access launch, the developers estimate that completing all planned ideas will require another one and a half to two years.

We therefore cannot yet answer whether The Tram will genuinely become a hidden gem. The project remains unreleased, has no user reviews, and no public wishlist figures are available. Its appeal currently lies less in proven success than in its unusually clear direction: one classic vehicle, a deliberately chosen transitional era, a fictional Central European city, and a driving model in which track condition and vehicle technology are expected to matter more than simply reaching the next stop.
