For many players, OMSI is still mainly city routes, rural runs, tight timetables, stop stress, and the completely normal madness of public transport. The Airport Map takes a different path. Here you are not simply sitting in a bus and driving from a residential area to a shopping center, but moving around an entire airport. In short, it is a free add-on for OMSI that simulates the daily work of a bus driver at the airport. And that is exactly why this map still feels special today: It takes a familiar gameplay principle and places it in an environment that is rarely experienced in bus simulations in such detail.

The airport includes many elements that you would also expect from a real airport. There are terminals, gates, parking garages, hangars, a cargo center, an airport fire station, a depot, and of course drivable aprons. Even the approach makes it clear that this is not simply a small fantasy stop placed next to a runway. It starts with an access road to the airport, including a ten-lane expressway and a visitor park. This visitor park works like a kind of aircraft museum for tourists and travelers, including an observation tower and serving as a turning point for airport buses. After that, it continues past the first apron, and this is exactly where the part begins that makes this map so special.

Because the aprons are not just a pretty backdrop, but completely drivable and therefore part of your workplace. There, it is no longer just about stopping neatly at a bus stop. You have to bring passengers from the gates to their aircraft because not every aircraft stands directly at the gate. What is especially exciting is that the map does not simply spoon-feed you every turn. You receive an assignment and have to know where your starting gate or target aircraft is located. So if you already tend to get lost quickly at an airport, you get the OMSI version of that served directly here – only with a bus, time pressure, and probably significantly less patience.

A major feature of the map is the nested one-way street system in the inner airport area. Especially there, it can quickly become confusing because the routes do not always seem as obvious as on a normal city route. You could almost say: Anyone who thought a tight old-town intersection in OMSI was already demanding should try working through this airport system. It becomes more difficult on the apron, where processes, destinations, and orientation have to be understood even more clearly. It is not without reason that it is recommended to watch a driving school video about apron lines beforehand. Without preparation, the system can quickly become frustrating – for the driver, for the virtual passengers, and probably eventually also for the developer, who then has to explain again why you should not simply take a shortcut across the airport.

The lines on the Airport Map can roughly be divided into two areas: lines in the inner airport area and lines on the apron or across apron areas. All lines start and end at the Gate Equipment Center, meaning the depot. Most services run between 4 AM and 11 PM, since there is a flight ban at the airport between 11 PM and 5 AM. In total, there are eight lines: four in the inner area, three on the apron, and one cross-apron line. Added to this is a nice detail: All lines are equipped with German and English announcements, which fits the international airport theme very well.

This exact mixture makes the map interesting. You do not only have classic line services, but also special airport tasks. Sometimes you drive through the inner airport area, sometimes across the apron, sometimes directly near the aircraft. This creates a different gameplay feel than typical OMSI maps. It is less about normal city traffic and more about orientation, operational processes, airport logic, and the special workplace of an airport bus driver. You notice very quickly: This is not everyday driving between supermarket, school, and station. This is airport operation with its own rules.

So if you want to experience OMSI from another perspective again, you should take a closer look at the Airport Map. It is free, unusual, and brings a workplace into the game that you do not see every day in bus simulations. By bus across the airport, through the one-way street labyrinth, and up to the aircraft – this is exactly the kind of OMSI expansion where you notice how much creative variety this old game still has.
