Following Seas is not a classic fishing simulator where you simply travel from spot to spot, throw out a net, and then watch numbers rise in your account. The game sees itself more as a mixture of seafaring, survival, cargo transport, fishing, and slow travel through a harsh open world. You are traveling with your ship through the remains of a collapsed empire and bring goods to scattered islands where people depend on exactly these deliveries. That may sound calm at first, but that is exactly where its special appeal comes from: This is not only about becoming rich as quickly as possible, but about dealing with wind, water, cargo, and weather.
What is particularly exciting is how strongly Following Seas puts the ship itself at the center. You do not simply steer a pretty boat through a backdrop, but have to deal with sails, wind forces, and stability. The sails can be adjusted via ropes, the cargo influences the balance, and ballast can decide whether your ship lies calmly in the water or becomes dangerously unstable in heavy seas. Added to this are navigation tools such as compass, chronometer, or quadrant. So anyone who wants not only to follow a marker on the map, but really engage with navigation and ship handling, should immediately become interested here.
The game also makes no secret of the fact that it does not want to be a big action adventure title. Following Seas is slow, sometimes unspectacular, and deliberately not designed for constant intensity. But that is exactly what can make it interesting for simulation fans. Not every simulator has to constantly deliver stimuli. Sometimes tension arises precisely because a voyage is long, the weather turns, water enters the ship, the pumps have to run, and you suddenly realize that a short moment of inattention at sea can become very expensive. Progressive flooding, stability problems caused by water on board, and the danger of capsizing make sure that the sea here is not just a pretty backdrop.
From a business perspective, Following Seas is also an interesting niche title. The numbers are not huge, but they are certainly noteworthy for a specialized seafaring project. According to the available market estimates, the game stands at around 3,300 copies sold, around 3,500 players, 136 reviews, and a review score of about 79 percent. The average playtime value of around 10 hours also shows that many buyers are not only briefly checking it out, but are actually engaging with the game. The owner estimates vary between different tools: Gamalytic comes to around 3,400 owners, VG Insights to around 4,200, and PlayTracker to around 5,500. This is not a mass market, but exactly such numbers often show whether a niche project is reaching a small, real target group.
Especially for Simulatoren-News, Following Seas is therefore interesting because the game does not try to please everyone. It is not Sea of Thieves, not a pure fishing simulator, and not a fast pirate action title. It is more of a slow ship game for people who want to engage with sea state, navigation, cargo, weather, and small decisions. This exact clarity can be an advantage in a niche. A game does not have to reach millions if it targets a small audience very precisely and creates a special feeling there.
Also important: Anyone who is unsure does not have to buy blindly. There is a free demo for Following Seas on Steam. This is especially useful for such a specific game because you can quickly see whether the slow pace, the type of controls, and the harsh sea suit you. For some, exactly that will be fascinating. Others will notice after a few minutes that the game is too quiet or too cumbersome for them. Both are completely legitimate, but a demo makes this decision much fairer.
Following Seas may therefore not be the biggest fish in the simulator pond, but it is a very special one. It shows that fishing and ship simulation does not always have to consist only of catch quotas, harbor menus, and quick missions. Sometimes a ship, a harsh sea, a bit of cargo, some fishing, and the question of whether you will really make it to the next island are enough. And that is exactly why you should at least have seen this game once.
