Trailer looks brilliant – but the game disappoints: Why this keeps happening again and again!
Trailers are not neutral previews in the gaming business. They are sales tools. Their goal is not to show you the most boring average moment of the game, but to create the strongest, most beautiful, and most exciting impression. That is exactly why trailers often look so much better than what you later experience yourself over many hours. A trailer shows the perfect camera angle, the perfect lighting mood, the best cut, the strongest scene, and often exactly the moments in which a game shines the most.
At first, that is nothing forbidden. Marketing works like this in almost every industry. A car is not shown in traffic during rain, but on an empty coastal road at sunset. A hotel does not show the crowded breakfast room, but the most beautiful pool view. It is similar with games: The trailer sells a feeling. It sells speed, size, atmosphere, drama, and anticipation. The problem begins when this feeling cannot be maintained permanently in the actual game.
Especially in simulations, this difference is particularly noticeable. In a trailer, a few strong images are enough to make a game feel bigger: a cleanly lit bus in a beautiful city, a train at sunset, an airplane above the clouds, or a truck on a perfect country road. But in the real game, it is not only this one moment that matters. What matters there are driving physics, controls, performance, AI traffic, sound, menus, bugs, long-term motivation, and the question of whether the whole thing still feels good after ten hours. This is exactly where trailer hype often separates from reality.
From a business perspective, this is easy to explain. A publisher has to create attention before the game releases. The stronger a trailer feels, the more people click, comment, wishlist the game, or maybe even buy directly in advance. The trailer is therefore part of the sales strategy. It is not only supposed to inform, but actively create desire. For a studio, a strong trailer can be decisive because the first days after release are economically extremely important.
For players, however, this creates an expectation problem. If a trailer relies too heavily on shine, editing, and mood, an image builds up in the mind that hardly any game can fully fulfill later. You then no longer simply expect a good game, but exactly the feeling from the trailer. If the game then feels slower, rougher, emptier, or technically weaker, disappointment emerges. Not necessarily because the game is objectively bad, but because the expectation was pulled too high beforehand.
In addition, trailers often deliberately show little everyday gameplay. Hardly any trailer shows longer loading times, clunky menus, small bugs, weaker textures up close, or repetitive processes. But exactly these things later shape the real everyday experience of playing. You are not playing two minutes of glossy video, but many hours of normal gameplay. And normal gameplay does not only consist of highlights, but also of routine. It is precisely this routine that ultimately decides whether a game really holds up.
That is why this recurring pattern emerges: Trailer = WOW, game = meh. The trailer shows the maximum. The game then has to prove itself in everyday use. And if this everyday experience is not strong enough, the mood quickly shifts. Anticipation becomes sobering reality, hype becomes criticism, and comments like “That looks brilliant” suddenly turn into discussions about performance, scope, or gameplay feel after release.
But that does not mean that every strong trailer is automatically dishonest. A good trailer can present a game honestly and still make it exciting. It only becomes problematic when the trailer promises an experience that the actual game can hardly deliver in that form. The larger the gap between marketing image and game reality, the stronger the disappointment feels later.
For developers and publishers, this is a risk. In the short term, a very strong trailer can bring many sales. In the long term, exaggerated hype can cost trust. Players remember when they were disappointed. Especially in niches such as simulations, trust is particularly important because many buyers look very closely, compare, comment, and either stay long-term or leave.
In the end, the most important question is therefore not whether a trailer looks impressive. Of course it should. The more important question is: Does the trailer really match the game that you later play yourself? If yes, anticipation is confirmed at release. If no, exactly this disappointment emerges that many players know all too well.
