A new simulator every year? Why that makes economic sense – and can still become dangerous!
Annual versions are nothing new in the games industry. Sports games have been doing it for years, big brands work with fixed release rhythms, and this logic also appears again and again in simulations: new part, new cover, new features, new packages, new attention. From a publisher’s point of view, that is not absurd at first. A new part can be marketed much more easily than a quiet update. It appears more visibly in stores, generates new press reports, can work with editions, bundles, and pre-orders, and also reaches players who long ago dropped out of the old part. Visibility is not a nice bonus in a market where new games appear every day on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox. Visibility is survival.
Simulations in particular have a special problem here. Many of these games live for years, but precisely because of that, they eventually become invisible to outsiders. A game that has existed for a long time can be technically developed further, receive new DLCs, and grow in content – but in the store, for many people it still looks like an “old game.” A new part breaks through this impression. It gives the publisher a moment when everyone looks again: press, YouTubers, streamers, platforms, old players, and new buyers. Economically, that is a strong argument. You cannot pretend that marketing is only evil packaging. Without attention, even good simulations sell worse, and without sales, long-term support becomes difficult.
In addition, a new part can make technical and structural sense. Sometimes an old base game reaches its limits. Menus, save files, console requirements, old systems, outdated technology, or a chaotic DLC structure that has grown over time can eventually become so heavy that a clean cut is understandable. A new part can then help get rid of ballast, pick up new players more easily, and reorganize old systems. For developers, it is also not always ideal to keep building for years on a foundation that was originally intended for completely different requirements. From this perspective, a new part can be more than a price tag with a fresh logo.
But this is exactly where the problem begins. Simulation players usually look very closely. They notice whether a new part really feels different. They compare functions, routes, vehicles, controls, performance, sounds, physics, timetables, AI, passengers, licenses, and of course also the price. If the new part is then sold externally as something big, but in everyday use only feels like a slightly rearranged version of the predecessor, frustration arises. Not necessarily because players are fundamentally against new parts. But because they want to know what they are supposed to pay for again. A new name alone is rarely enough in this scene.
That is the core of the debate: What looks like visibility, product maintenance, and market logic to publishers can quickly feel like repetition, mandatory purchase, and artificial separation to players. It becomes especially difficult when content from older parts is resold, only partially carried over, or not technically continued cleanly. Then the community rightly asks whether the annual rhythm really serves the game – or rather the calendar. And that question is not unfair. Anyone who offers a new part every year has to show every year what is new enough about it.
Still, it would be too easy to only point at publishers. Players also expect a lot. They want big progress, better technology, more content, stable performance, more realistic processes, fair prices, old DLCs, new functions, and preferably no breaks. That is understandable, but it is also difficult to implement. A simulation is not a small menu update. Especially when real vehicles, routes, licenses, timetables, or complex systems are involved, improvements cost time and money. A publisher therefore not only has to develop, but also explain why a certain step is being taken. And exactly this explaining is often the point where the mood tips.
Because can simulation players understand the economic logic behind annual versions at all? Yes, many can. The community is not stupid. Many understand very well that visibility is important, that shops push new products more strongly, that a fresh release creates more attention, and that companies have to make money. But understanding does not automatically mean accepting. Players can understand why a publisher wants to release a new simulator part every year – and still say: For me, it does not feel fair enough. That is not a contradiction, but the difference between business logic and personal purchase feeling.
That is exactly why annual simulator versions are so risky. They can work if the new part is justified clearly enough. If features really become noticeably better, if old weaknesses are addressed, if the communication is honest, and if players do not feel like they are only being pushed into a new shell. Then a new part can even make sense. It can create attention, reduce technical legacy issues, and reach new target groups. But if the progress feels too small, the price seems too high, or the old version is abandoned too quickly, the perception tips. Then visibility quickly becomes mistrust.
For simulations, trust is especially important. Many players invest not only money, but also time, habit, and often years of attachment into a game. They buy DLCs, learn systems, build collections, and discuss every detail. Anyone who tells them every year: “Here is the new part,” has to explain very cleanly why this step is necessary. Not with marketing phrases, but concretely: What is really new? What gets better? What happens to old content? How long will the predecessor be supported? And why would a major update not have been enough?
In the end, there are therefore two legitimate sides. From a publisher’s perspective, annual versions can make sense because they create visibility, enable new sales, and strategically reposition a product. From a player’s perspective, however, they can feel like an unnecessary restart if the progress is not clear enough. Exactly this tension makes the topic so strong. It is not just about “greedy” or “ungrateful.” It is about the question of how simulations can be financed, maintained, and developed further in the long term without losing their own core community.
That is why this topic will also be particularly exciting in the next Community Court next week. Because it is not just about a simple yes-or-no question. It is about the relationship between economic reality and player trust. Does a simulation really need a new part every year? Or would a long-term maintained main game with major updates, clear roadmaps, and fair DLCs be more understandable for many players? The answer will probably not be completely clear. But exactly that makes the debate important.
