Community Court #4: Does a simulation really need a new entry every year?

⚠️ Maintenance on September 22, 2026

Our hosting provider will carry out external maintenance on September 22, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM CEST. During this period, our website and app may be temporarily unavailable. As the maintenance is not being carried out by us, we cannot predict whether, when or for how long any outages may occur.

There are few topics where opinions in the simulation community split as quickly as they do with yearly new releases. Train Sim World is a particularly good example of this, because the series has been appearing regularly with new main versions for years and therefore keeps triggering the same basic question: Is a new entry really a genuine step forward, or would it be better for players to keep developing an existing game for longer and more cleanly?

There are definitely good arguments for yearly releases. A new entry can be a clear restart for developers and publishers. It brings attention, new players, new reviews, new trailers and usually also a better entry point for people who have not been involved so far. Especially with simulations that keep growing over the years, a fresh main entry can help clean up old systems, make menus easier to understand, renew technology or build new foundations. From an economic perspective, the model is understandable as well: A major release sells more visibly than a quiet update, and without revenue, complex simulations with licences, vehicles, routes, sound recordings and ongoing development are simply difficult to finance.

But the opposing side is at least just as strong. With yearly entries, many players quickly get the feeling that they are being asked to pay again, even though the basic feel of the game has not changed massively. It becomes especially critical when old problems remain, bugs carry over or central community wishes stay open across several versions. Then a new entry does not feel like bold progress, but rather like a paid restart with familiar baggage. On top of that, anyone who owns many DLCs naturally looks very closely. What happens to the old content? Does it remain compatible? Does it get improved? Or do you buy a new base package every year while the large pile of add-on content becomes more and more confusing?

In the end, the assessment strongly depends on what a new entry actually delivers. If a yearly release only brings a new cover, a few new routes, smaller menu changes and a big marketing wave, the criticism is absolutely understandable. Then a large, well-explained update would probably feel more honest to many players. But if a new entry noticeably cleans things up technically, improves the onboarding, sensibly carries old content forward, offers fair upgrade paths and brings real structural improvements, then a new main entry can definitely make sense. What matters is not the year in the title, but the actual added value.

That is exactly why this topic is so interesting for our Community Court. Simulations do not only live from new content, but also from trust. Players often invest a lot of time and a lot of money into an ecosystem. Anyone who releases a new entry every year therefore has to explain especially clearly why this step is necessary. Otherwise, the impression quickly appears that it is not mainly the game that is being developed, but the shopping cart. So the question is not only: Should a simulation be allowed to appear anew every year? The better question is: What does a new entry have to deliver for you to accept it as fair progress?
