The simulation community, especially in the field of rail and bus, is not more critical because fundamentally worse-tempered people sit there. The most important point is much simpler: These games depict things that many players know from the real world. A fantasy world can claim almost anything, a shooter can build its own rules, a racing game can exaggerate with style. But when a bus, a railway line, a city, a station or a train class is recreated, many players immediately have a comparison in their head. They know what the door sounds like. They know the line. They have already ridden there. Some even work in that field. That makes every mistake more tangible. Not “some bug”, but: “That is not right.”

That is exactly what makes simulations psychologically special. Many players do not use these games only to switch off, but as an extension of a real interest. For some, the BR 420 is not simply a vehicle model, but childhood, commuter route, favourite train or technical cult object. For others, an OMSI map is not just a map, but their home district, their old way to school or the bus they took every morning. If something then feels careless, wrong or half-baked, criticism immediately feels more personal. Not because players are childish, but because the topic is more emotionally charged for them than in many other genres.

Then there is specialist knowledge. In rail and bus communities, there are many people who look extremely closely. Some know timetables, route layouts, vehicles, door controls, sounds, stops, signal aspects, operating procedures and real regulations better than some marketing text could ever explain. On the one hand, that is valuable for developers, because hardly any community finds mistakes so quickly and provides so much detailed knowledge. On the other hand, it is exhausting because almost nothing is simply “irrelevant”. In other games, nobody asks whether the lever at the bottom left in the cockpit has exactly the right shape. In a simulation, someone asks that. And often that person is even right.

Another major point is money. Simulation players often do not just pay once for a game, but over years for add-ons, DLCs, expansions, vehicles, routes and maps. Anyone who has been with Train Sim World, Train Simulator Classic, OMSI, ETS 2 or other simulations for a longer time has often invested significantly more than in a normal full-price game. That automatically increases expectations. If someone pays 30 euros for a DLC, then a wrong sound is no longer just “a pity”, but annoying. If someone has put hundreds of euros into a platform over years, then poor communication does not feel like a small thing, but like a lack of respect towards a loyal customer base.

That is why the community is also so sensitive about roadmaps and promises. In many simulation games, developments take a long time. Vehicles, routes, console ports, updates or features are sometimes shown early, then postponed, changed or remain unclear for a long time. Psychologically, that creates a backlog of expectations. Players are not just waiting for some skin, but for something that is important to their hobby. If nothing happens for months or answers feel evasive, anticipation turns into mistrust. And mistrust is dangerous in this scene because many players have very long memories. A disappointing release is not forgotten after two weeks. It is brought out again with the next trailer. Rail and bus simulations also have a problem that many larger gaming sectors have less strongly: There are often hardly any real alternatives. Anyone dissatisfied with a shooter plays the next one. Anyone who cannot do anything with an open-world game finds ten others. But anyone who wants to drive realistic bus lines, German railway routes, specific train classes or concrete cities often has only a few options. That creates a kind of forced closeness. Players are frustrated, but still stay because the topic is too important to them. That makes criticism sharper. Not because they do not care about anything, but because they very much do care.

Exactly here, this typical simulation paradox emerges: The loudest critics are often not the ones who hate the game. They are often the ones who most want it to become better. They buy DLCs, compare details, write long comments, test updates, make screenshots, create mods, report errors and discuss every little thing. From the outside, that sometimes looks like constant complaining. From the inside, it is often disappointed attachment. You are attached to a game, but you are annoyed because it once again does not deliver what would have been possible. Psychologically, that is a strong mixture: love for the topic plus frustration with the implementation.

The way of playing is also different. In many genres, speed, competition, story or action count. In rail and bus simulations, repetition, routine and credibility count. You drive lines again and again, know procedures, notice small deviations and spend a lot of time in the same vehicles. That makes mistakes stand out more strongly. A wrongly sounding engine does not annoy once, but on every run. Poor driving physics do not disturb briefly, but permanently. A missing feature is not a small hole at the edge, but sits directly in the everyday life of the game. Simulations live from repetition – and repetition makes weaknesses bigger.

Then there is the social side. Simulation communities often consist of many small expert groups: real drivers, model builders, modders, railway enthusiasts, public transport fans, tech nerds, map builders, console players, casual players and people who simply like driving. These groups do not always want the same thing. Some want maximum technical accuracy, others better performance, others more lines, cheaper DLCs, console quality, modding, multiplayer or simply a nicer map. When a developer makes a decision, they almost always disappoint some group. That makes the community hard to serve.

But one also has to say honestly: Yes, parts of this community can be exhausting. Criticism sometimes becomes unnecessarily harsh, personal or petty. Some players confuse justified disappointment with a free pass for poor manners. A developer who builds a vehicle is not automatically an opponent. A community manager is not personally responsible for every roadmap decision. And not every mistake is fraud. This boundary must remain clear. Being critical is important. But anyone who wants to be taken seriously should not turn every disappointment into an attack.

Nevertheless, it would be wrong to simply label the simulation community as “difficult”. It is demanding because the genre is demanding. It is sensitive because it knows a lot, pays a lot and expects a lot. It is loud because it often has the feeling that it is only heard at all through pressure. And it is mistrustful because many players have experienced over years that beautiful trailers, big roadmaps and expensive DLCs do not automatically mean good results. That is not comfortable for developers and publishers. But it is a signal that should be taken seriously.

The solution is not for players to suddenly swallow everything. And it is also not for developers to panic at every comment. The solution would be more honesty on both sides. Developers and publishers have to say more clearly what is possible, what is not possible, why something is missing and which priorities are being set. Players, in turn, have to distinguish between real criticism and merely unloading frustration. Because in the end, both sides often want the same thing at the core: good simulations that work in the long term. Only standing between them is often a pile of money, expectations, technology, communication and very many people who know exactly what a door beep should sound like.
