Not road and rail again: Why ship simulators are becoming much more exciting right now!

We constantly talk about roads, rails, and timetables in the simulation scene. ETS2, ATS, The Bus, Train Sim World, Train Simulator Classic, OMSI, Farming Simulator – all important topics, no question. But sometimes it feels as if the simulation world is simply driving past the harbor while the next interesting area has long been waiting there: ship simulations.
And yes, at first glance ships may sound less clickable than a new bus, a loud truck, or the next big railway debate. But exactly that could be a mistake. Because on the water there is a very unique appeal: harbors, coasts, weather, currents, heavy maneuvers, large machines, and this feeling that a ship does not simply brake just because you have noticed that the harbor is closer than planned.
Anyone who has ever tried to dock a large ship cleanly knows: This is not like parking a car. It is more like a shopping cart with a mind of its own, only the size of an apartment block and with water under the tires. That is exactly why ship simulations can be really exciting when they do not only show pretty waves, but take the inertia, the weight, and the planning behind it seriously.
There are currently two names you should keep an eye on: Seafarer: The Ship Sim and Professional Ship Simulator.
Seafarer: The Ship Sim is already in Early Access. The game launched on Steam on October 7, 2025 and is being developed by astragon Development and published by astragon Entertainment. The full version is still planned for 2026. The developers speak of an open maritime world, various missions, coast guard, cargo transport, dynamic weather, day-night cycle, and a growing fleet ranging from small workboats to large ocean-going ships.
The approach of Seafarer seems more like accessible everyday ship life. You are not supposed to first memorize half a nautical manual before you even get out of the harbor. On the official website, it is explicitly stated that Seafarer does not want to be a hard training simulator where you have to know every screw before the engine starts. Instead, it is about a large map, missions, career, quick play, weather, ships, and tasks at sea.
That is important because ship simulations can quickly seem intimidating. Many players immediately think of complicated displays, long waiting times, and maneuvers where, after ten minutes, you still do not know whether you are driving, drifting, or slowly insulting a quay wall. Seafarer apparently tries to make exactly this barrier smaller. It wants to make seafaring playable without immediately overwhelming the player with sailor’s knots and harbor radio.
On the other side is Professional Ship Simulator. And the name alone does not sound like a cozy harbor tour with a seagull view. According to Steam, the game is planned for 2026 and is supposed to enter Early Access first. The developers speak of a detailed, realistic physics model, two large main scenarios, and eight different mission types. Tutorials are also mentioned, which are supposed to explain the entry.
Here, the focus seems to be more strongly on precise ship operation. Steam mentions, among other things, realistic systems, ship behavior, hydrodynamics, wind, current, anchor behavior, radar, radio, sonar, damage, water ingress, lines, and towing systems. Simply put: The game does not just want to say “press W and the ship moves.” It wants to show that a ship on water does not react like a bus on asphalt.
And that is exactly where the comparison becomes exciting. Seafarer seems more like the maritime career and mission simulator for players who want to get on the water without first starting a captain training course in their living room. Professional Ship Simulator, on the other hand, sounds like the more serious approach for people who want to know why a ship does not simply do what you would like it to do while docking.
So one is more like: “Come on board, we will build a ship adventure together.”
The other is more like: “You want to move a large ship? Then please first learn why wind, current, and inertia are not your friends.”
Both can work. And that is exactly why 2026 will be interesting for ship simulations.
Because so far, water has often been the small side channel in simulation coverage. Buses have OMSI and The Bus. Trucks have ETS2 and ATS. Trains have TSC, TSW, and SimRail. Agriculture has Farming Simulator. But ships? There are projects, fans, and individual titles, yes, but often this clear feeling is missing: “A new wave is happening there right now.” Maybe exactly this wave is starting now.
Seafarer brings the more accessible entry point for that. It appeals to players who want to experience harbors, missions, career, and open sea. Coast guard, cargo, rescue, firefighting, buying ships, driving new tasks – that sounds like a game that can also pick up people who have had little to do with ships so far. It is a bit like the first step onto the pier: Not immediately captain on a giant tanker, but first noticing whether the water grabs you at all.
Professional Ship Simulator, on the other hand, could fill the gap for players who want more seriousness. So people who say: “Nice that there are missions – but does the ship behave believably too?” Especially terms like hydrodynamics, current, propeller effect, or line forces sound dry, but are extremely important for a ship. Simply put: A ship has to feel heavy, inert, and dependent on the water. Otherwise it is just a bus with a wave effect.
And exactly that is the big opportunity. Ship simulations do not simply have to be the next vehicle simulation with a different backdrop. They can offer something that bus, train, and truck do not have: water as opponent, partner, and playing field at the same time. A road just lies there. A rail defines the direction. But water moves. Wind pushes. Current pulls. Waves change the situation. A harbor maneuver is not a quick click, but a small fight against physics and timing.
For many players, that may be unfamiliar, but exactly for that reason it is exciting. A ship simulator has different highlights than a bus or truck game. Not the perfect timetable. Not the quick delivery. But the clean docking. The controlled maneuver in the harbor. The rescue mission in bad weather. Cargo transport through rough seas. Entering a harbor where you realize: Don’t get hectic now, otherwise the mission turns into very expensive contact with concrete.
But for such games to really reach more of an audience, they have to be explained clearly. Many players immediately understand why a bus simulator can be exciting: drive a line, take passengers, be punctual. With ships, you have to show the appeal more strongly. Why is a harbor maneuver exciting? Why is slow driving fun? Why is wind a problem? Why does a large ship feel completely different from a small workboat? This is exactly where games like Seafarer and Professional Ship Simulator have to build their community.
And for us as a simulation site, that is an opportunity. If we only talk about OMSI, ETS2, or the next railway debate, we stay in the same circles. Ship simulations open up a different audience: people who like harbors, coasts, seafaring, technology, rescue missions, freighters, tankers, tugboats, or simply that maritime feeling. Not every one of these readers automatically comes from the bus or truck corner. But many could find themselves in it if the topic is made tangible for them.
Because in the end, a ship simulator is not “slow and boring.” It is differently slow. A good ship maneuver is like chess with steel, water, and very little braking distance. You decide early, correct carefully, and hope that your plan does not end five minutes later as a scratch on the quay wall. Many do not even know this kind of tension yet because they may never have looked into this genre before.
In summary, Seafarer and Professional Ship Simulator do not simply stand for “two more ship games.” They show two directions in which the genre could become more exciting again. Seafarer wants to offer maritime career, open world, missions, and accessible entry. Professional Ship Simulator wants to focus more strongly on physics, technology, systems, and precise ship handling. One title brings you on board more casually, the other gives you more of the feeling that you had better know what you are doing before casting off.
And exactly this mix could do ship simulation good. Not everyone wants to sail the same course. Some want career, missions, and atmosphere. Others want physics, systems, and real challenge. If both approaches work, 2026 could become much more exciting for ship fans than many currently have on their radar.
Maybe it is time, then, not to look only at road and rail. Sometimes the next exciting simulator debate is not at the bus stop, not on the motorway, and not on the platform – but in the harbor basin.
