Train Fever was the first title developed by Urban Games and released in September 2014. As a transport simulation, it laid the foundation for a series that continues to evolve today. The game simulates the development of transportation starting in 1850 across Europe and the United States, combining railways, road traffic, and economic systems into a unified experience. For many players, it was an entry point into this type of simulation, even though it now appears quite basic in comparison to modern standards.

Looking at the numbers, Train Fever had a solid start. By late November 2015, it had sold over 120,000 copies, which is a respectable figure for a first project in this genre. At release, interest was high, with a peak of 3406 concurrent players according to SteamDB. However, that period is long gone, and the current situation tells a very different story.

Today, player numbers sit in the low double digits. At the time of writing, only 15 players are active, with a 24-hour peak of 16. This clearly places Train Fever among titles with a very small active community. This decline is not surprising, considering how the series has evolved. Transport Fever and Transport Fever 2 expanded and improved many of the original systems, both technically and in terms of gameplay. With a third installment already announced for 2026, the gap continues to grow.

In this context, Train Fever feels more like a foundation than a viable alternative. It shows where everything started but cannot compete with its successors in most areas. At the same time, it remains an interesting look back at how the genre has developed over the years. Those who still play it today likely do so out of nostalgia or curiosity about the origins of the series.

In the end, the question is whether a game like Train Fever still needs to play a role today. Maybe its legacy is enough. What do you think? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.
