If you play simulators, you know how important mods are. Games like Euro Truck Simulator 2, OMSI 2, or The Bus heavily rely on them on PC. New maps, vehicles, realism improvements—this is what keeps these games alive for years. So the question keeps coming up: why is this missing on console?

The simple answer: because consoles are built differently. Systems from Sony and Microsoft are “closed platforms.” You don’t have access to game files, can’t modify anything, and can’t inject your own content. Everything runs in a controlled ecosystem. And that’s where modding usually ends.

On PC, it’s completely different. You drop a mod into a folder—and it works. That’s why huge modding communities exist, especially in simulation games. On console, this simply doesn’t work. Even if developers of games like City Transport Simulator 2026 or Bus Simulator 21 want to support mods, they can’t just decide it. They need platform approval—and that means restrictions, moderation, and complexity.

Another key factor is the business model. Platform holders earn money through DLCs, expansions, and content. Simulation games especially thrive on this—new buses, maps, features. Mods are usually free. That creates a conflict: free content bypasses monetization. That doesn’t fit the structure of console ecosystems.

Then there’s the technical and legal side. Mods must be checked, must not violate rights, and must be stable. In simulation games, which often use real brands and locations, this becomes even more complex. On PC, the user takes the risk. On console, the platform does—so control is much stricter.

In the end, the picture is clear: developers are rarely the issue. They work within a system that limits modding. And that system is intentional. Consoles offer convenience, stability, and ease of use—but at the cost of freedom and modding.

And that’s the key point: if you play on console, you consciously chose this system.
