City Masterplan - A New City-Building Challenger Wants to Redefine the Genre
City Masterplan has been announced as a new city builder with a very confident pitch. The game wants to strike a balance between highly realistic city simulation and smooth, intuitive controls, seemingly aiming directly at a gap many genre fans have been talking about for a while. On paper, the concept is ambitious: from terrain sculpting and road layout to architecture, lighting, and atmosphere, the game promises a high degree of creative freedom so you can shape your ideal city in detail.
One of the main selling points is construction freedom. Instead of relying on rigid grid restrictions, City Masterplan promises flexible tools for roads, curves, elevated bridges, and complex interchanges. It also claims to support city creation at a true one-to-one scale. At the same time, the game does not want to be just a visual sandbox. The city is described as a complex machine in which supply chains, traffic flow, public services, housing, jobs, and citizen satisfaction all interact. That means the goal is not only building, but also management.
Another major focus is information clarity. According to the announcement, data views and info panels are meant to show exactly how the city functions, helping you make decisions with more confidence. That could be a meaningful strength, because few things in city builders are more frustrating than traffic chaos where you are left guessing whether the intersection, the industrial zone, or half the city is actually causing the problem. If City Masterplan can truly deliver on that promise, it may stand out for the right reasons.
Presentation is also clearly part of the pitch. The maps are said to be extremely large, with different landscapes such as coastal regions or areas beneath snow-capped mountains, alongside dynamic weather. Architecturally, the game talks about multiple styles, including classic American metropolitan design and more Chinese-inspired urban aesthetics. On top of that, it promises landmark buildings at realistic proportions, a large asset library, and procedural systems to add more environmental detail. In other words, the game wants to look big, dense, and lively.
At the same time, there is one obvious limitation to the current excitement. There is no release date yet, and for now this is only an announcement. The developer and publisher, 1:1 Studio, also appears to be relatively new, which makes it fair to question whether the project can truly deliver on everything it is promising. That is why some caution is reasonable here. Still, one point seems fair even at this early stage: visually, what has been shown so far looks promising. Whether City Masterplan becomes a genuine threat to Cities: Skylines or just another ambitious contender will only become clear later.
What do you think about City Masterplan? Could it become serious competition for Cities: Skylines, or does it still sound like too many promises and too little proven gameplay? Share your thoughts in the comments.
