IMPORTANT Security Alert for OMSI Players: Are you using “No More Sleep” version 1.0.3? OMSI WebDisk warns of a potential security risk!
The OMSI WebDisk reports that initial analyses have identified a possible security risk. Specifically, the program is said to have attempted, during execution, to contact a website in order to download another file called bootstrapper.exe. Although this link was invalid, meaning that according to the current status no download could take place, this behavior alone is already causing significant security concerns. In addition, after installing the patch and starting OMSI, a file called logtrack.exe is reportedly created. These exact points led to the file entry in the Filebase being temporarily deactivated.
Another critical point, according to the WebDisk, is that differences were found between the source code provided on GitHub and the compiled application. This is highly unusual, especially for open-source software, and under normal circumstances should not happen. For this reason, the team is currently strongly recommending not to use or run version 1.0.3. Earlier versions are, according to current knowledge, not affected.
If you have installed this version, you should precautionarily disable or remove it and keep an eye on the further official information from the OMSI WebDisk.
For uninstallation, it is recommended to first delete the files NMSPatcher.exe or similarly named files, as well as KRNL32.DLL, from the OMSI directory. In addition, it is particularly important that several files modified by the patch are replaced again with the original files. The affected files are BaseType.dll, d3dx9.dll, dxerr9.dll, fontsPr.dll, qtintf.dll, qtintf70.dll, ode.dll, and Omsi.exe.
For users of the Steam version, the easiest way is to use the “Verify integrity of game files” function so that the original files are automatically downloaded again. Anyone who has a backup should restore these files from a clean backup.
Very specifically, the following applies here: verifying the files can practically never do any harm in this case. On the contrary—it ensures that potentially modified or corrupted files are replaced with the official original files. This significantly reduces the existing security risk, because no manipulated components remain in the OMSI folder.
That is exactly why this step is currently strongly recommended for all affected users, even if OMSI still appears to start normally at first glance.
