Why is CTS 2026 a new game instead of an update?

With the announcement of City Transport Simulator 2026, one question immediately appeared in the community. Why is this a completely new game instead of just a major update to the existing CTS? If you’ve already invested time or bought DLCs, this question becomes even more important. Will everything carry over, or do you have to start again? And what does this decision mean for the future of the game?

The key point is this: CTS 2026 was intentionally developed as a separate game because many core systems have been fundamentally reworked. This includes the technical structure, AI, performance and parts of the gameplay.

These changes go so deep that simply updating the existing game would not have been practical. You can think of it like rebuilding parts of a structure rather than just renovating it. In such cases, starting with a new foundation is often the cleaner solution.

Another reason is to protect existing content. By separating the versions, the original CTS remains unchanged, while CTS 2026 can evolve on a new technical base.

This leads to the next question: Do you now have two games in your library?
Yes. CTS remains available, and CTS 2026 is added as a separate title. You can choose when or if you want to switch.

One of the most important questions for players is about savegames. The answer here is clear: your existing save data can be carried over. You can continue your progress in CTS 2026 without starting from scratch.

The same applies to DLCs. All previously purchased content can be used in CTS 2026. There is no need to buy anything again.

Looking ahead, CTS 2026 will be the foundation for future updates and new content. This means ongoing development will focus on this new version.
