For decades, the Berlin S-Bahn had a distinctive acoustic signal played when train doors were closing. The simple sequence of tones became part of the city’s everyday soundscape.

The signal was developed in the late 1970s by engineer Gerhard Iben and his colleagues in the Reichsbahn repair works in Berlin-Schöneweide. At the time, they were tasked with creating a warning sound for closing train doors.

Before that, the only warning was the well-known announcement “Zurückbleiben bitte”. The resulting chime was introduced in 1986 and quickly became recognizable across the entire S-Bahn network.

Even later trains adopted the sound. After German reunification, the new Class 481 trains kept the iconic signal, and the sound eventually became part of Berlin’s cultural identity. The signal even appeared in pop culture. Berlin DJ Paul Kalkbrenner sampled it in his track “Train” from the movie Berlin Calling.

However, things changed with the newest generation of S-Bahn trains.

Since 2021, the new Class 483/484 trains have been entering service. Instead of the traditional chime, they use a fast pulsating beeping signal.

The reason is a European Union regulation on railway accessibility. The regulation – known in the railway sector as TSI PRM – defines accessibility standards for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility across the EU railway system. Among other things, it requires door warning signals in new trains to follow specific acoustic patterns. The signal must consist of rapid pulses, typically six to ten per second, with defined sound characteristics.

Because of these requirements, the traditional Berlin chime could no longer be used in new trains. However, older trains benefit from grandfathering rules. That means existing trains are allowed to keep their original signals.

As a result, many Berlin S-Bahn trains – especially the Class 481 fleet – still use the classic chime today.

Since these trains have been modernized and are expected to remain in service into the 2030s, the iconic sound will likely remain part of Berlin’s soundscape for several more years.

But over time, as new trains replace older ones, the familiar chime may slowly fade away.

Are you familiar with the famous door sound of Berlin's S-Bahn? Have you noticed that new trains sound different? Do you prefer the old two-tone sound to the new beeping? Should this iconic sound be preserved? Do you think sounds like this are part of a city's identity? Have you heard the new sound of the 483/484 series?
