If OMSI was so popular, why not just make OMSI 3?

OMSI 2 remains one of the most recognizable bus simulation titles ever released. For many players it was the entry point into realistic bus driving simulations with complex vehicles and a strong modding community.

Because of this legacy, a common question appears in the community: why not simply create a new game called OMSI 3? From a marketing perspective, the idea seems obvious. A well-known name can instantly attract attention and remind players of past experiences.

However, the key issue lies in what the gaming industry calls IP, short for Intellectual Property. This refers to the ownership of names, brands, designs and other creative elements. Whoever owns the IP controls how and where the name can be used.

In the case of OMSI, the rights are shared between different parties, including the original developers and the publisher. That means no single company can independently decide to create a new title under the OMSI name.

There is also another important factor: The Bus is developed by a completely different studio, TML Studios. Instead of continuing the OMSI brand, they are building their own IP with The Bus. For a studio, owning its own brand often means greater control over future development and releases.

From a community perspective, the idea of an OMSI 3 is understandable. The name carries nostalgia and recognition. But behind the scenes, legal and structural realities make the situation far more complex.

What do you think? Would you have preferred a new simulator called OMSI 3 – or do you like the idea of The Bus becoming its own brand? Do you think The Bus makes sense as a new brand? Do you think OMSI still has great potential today? Would you buy a modern OMSI right away?
