The oldest ICE generation is still running – but how many are left?

The ICE 1 symbolized the start of high-speed rail in Germany. But how many of these trains are still running today? Before reading on, how large would you estimate the current ICE 1 fleet to be?

The ICE 1 marked the beginning of high-speed rail service in Germany in the early 1990s. Its distinctive design and power cars made it an icon of long-distance travel. Despite its age, the class has not disappeared from active service.

A total of 58 ICE 1 trainsets still exist. This means the first ICE generation remains part of the operational fleet, even though newer generations such as ICE 3 and ICE 4 dominate many routes.

While the technology clearly reflects its era, the ICE 1 continues to serve as a veteran in daily long-distance operations rather than a museum piece.
