Among the most heavily used railway corridors in Germany is the region between Mannheim and Frankfurt am Main, including the Riedbahn, the Main-Neckar line and the Mainz–Ludwigshafen route. Around 650 train movements per day take place here, combining freight, regional and long-distance services.

The high-speed line between Augsburg and Munich also sees significant traffic, with approximately 300 trains daily. Meanwhile, the Kinzigtalbahn between Hanau and Fulda is another key north-south artery carrying a mix of services.

In western Germany, the lines from Cologne to Duisburg and onward to Dortmund, as well as via Wuppertal to Hagen and Hamm, are among the busiest corridors in the Ruhr region.

These routes illustrate how different traffic types converge in economically strong regions, resulting in extremely high utilization.

Have you experienced particularly dense traffic on any German railway lines – and which ones stand out in your memory?
