How widespread is the IC2 really? The actual number of IC2s in Germany! Surprisingly large or smaller than expected?

The Intercity 2, based on Twindexx double-deck coaches, was procured in several batches. Each batch consisted of complete coach sets with assigned locomotives. The first order included 27 trainsets with 27 locomotives. The second order added 17 trainsets and 17 locomotives, with numbering changes implemented in June 2019. The third batch comprised another 26 trainsets with corresponding locomotives.

In total, this results in 70 IC2 trainsets operating in Germany. Each set forms a fixed consist for long-distance service. This makes the IC2 a significant part of the Intercity network rather than a minor addition.

Whether appreciated for its capacity or criticized for comfort aspects, the IC2 fleet is clearly substantial in size.
