This German railway twists like a corkscrew – and you can drive it in Train Simulator!
The southern section follows the Wutach River, giving the line its name. The middle section is where engineering becomes spectacular. To overcome approximately 250 meters of elevation within just nine kilometers—without exceeding a gradient of 1:100—engineers designed a complex system of hairpin curves, large viaducts and a full 360-degree spiral tunnel. This unusual alignment earned the nickname “Sauschwänzlebahn” (“Pig’s Tail Railway”).
Originally built in the late 19th century as a strategic military railway near the Swiss border, the line opened fully in 1890. Passenger services were gradually reduced in the mid-20th century. Since the 1970s, the central section has operated as a museum railway with steam trains, while the northern section forms part of a regional passenger network. In 2014, the route was designated a Historic Landmark of Engineering in Germany.
In Train Simulator, the Wutach Valley Railway offers a distinctive driving experience. Instead of high-speed runs, drivers face tight curves, gradients, viaduct crossings and varied landscapes. The steam operation element adds further operational depth, requiring careful throttle and brake control. It is not a typical main line, but rather a deliberately engineered mountain railway shaped by historical and geographical constraints.
