My Absolute Favorite Train Simulator Addon? Berlin’s Ringbahn!

The Berlin Ringbahn stretches approximately 37 kilometers around the inner city, forming a complete loop. It connects multiple S-Bahn services with long-distance, regional, and freight lines. Locals even call it the “dog’s head” due to its distinctive shape. The area inside the loop defines fare zone A – essentially the heart of Berlin.

In real life, about 1,100 trains run daily on the Ringbahn, transporting over half a million passengers. The section between Treptower Park and Ostkreuz is particularly busy. The S41 runs clockwise, while the S42 runs counterclockwise, creating a dense and continuous service pattern. Historically, the route dates back to 1871, was later electrified, and experienced interruptions during political changes before returning to full operation.

In Train Simulator, the Ringbahn addon recreates this route with strong attention to detail. The BR483/484 is included, representing the modern rolling stock used today. While it’s not my favorite train personally, it fits the route well. Driving feels precise, especially braking accurately at the closely spaced stations. Maintaining the timetable is challenging but achievable.

What stands out most is the route design. Stations are carefully detailed, the urban scenery feels rich, and background city noise adds to the atmosphere. You truly feel embedded in Berlin’s busy rail network as you circle the city.

There are minor drawbacks. I would welcome more challenging scenarios, similar to the demanding “Mitten in Berlin” addon. Also, the door controls occasionally feel slightly inconsistent.

Still, despite these small imperfections, the Berlin Ringbahn remains my favorite Train Simulator addon. Perhaps it’s the dense timetable, the urban backdrop, or simply the rhythm of nonstop S-Bahn operations. Whatever it is – I keep coming back.
