One of the most distinctive features of the DT5 is its fully walk-through design. For the first time in Hamburg’s metro history, passengers can move freely through the entire three-car train. This improves passenger distribution and creates a more open interior. In total, 163 units were ordered and delivered, built by a consortium of Alstom-LHB and Bombardier, both now part of Alstom Transport Germany.
The procurement of the DT5 took place in several stages. The first 87 units had a total value of around 340 million euros, followed by additional orders in later years. The first completed unit, numbered 301, was presented in March 2010 and underwent extensive testing. A public presentation followed in early 2012 at Jungfernstieg station. By early 2019, 100 DT5 units were already in service across Hamburg.
The introduction of the DT5 was not without criticism. In particular, the loud braking noise shortly before stopping was often mentioned. This was caused by aluminum brake discs, required due to strict axle load limits on elevated sections such as line U3. Over several years, the electric braking system was modified so it could be used down to a complete standstill, significantly reducing the issue.
This leads to a common question: how can you drive the DT5 yourself in a simulation? Fortunately, there are several options. On PC, Subway Sim 2 features the DT5 on Hamburg’s U3 line, where it operates as a two-unit formation due to platform length. Also on PC, Train Simulator Classic offers an add-on for Hamburg’s U1 line, allowing the DT5 to run as a three-unit formation.
What about consoles? Console players are covered as well. Subway Sim 2 brings the Hamburg U3 and the DT5 to both PlayStation and Xbox. This means that PC and console players alike can experience Hamburg’s most familiar metro train from the driver’s seat.
Do you regularly ride the DT5 in Hamburg? How does the DT5 compare to older trains for you? Did you notice the braking noise in the past? Would you like to drive the DT5 yourself?
